I'm trying to set up a deer hunt for the upcoming season. I'm from Goleta, so I'll be using the 154 to access the LPNF. I was wondering if you have to use approved campgrounds, or if there are any areas where you're allowed to camp in the wild (I imagine there would be a long list of things you can't do, campfires?)

Just trying to get some info, thanks!

I've poked my nose around hwy 154 and not stumbled on any good deer habitat that was far from private property and accessible by car/foot/bike. Maybe going north from the east end of the Santa Ynez River would be my first choice. The La Brea fire closure to the northwest is still in effect. It may open up before deer season - we'll see. May be too early for new growth to establish good deer habitat, though.

I'm also planning to hunt deer in the LPNF this season. I'll mountain bike in this year and have a trip half-planned. Been gearing up for the past year. If that appeals to you, I'm looking for a hunting partner.

Not sure about the answer to your question. Please post whatever you learn.

I was just out at LPF 2 weeks ago. Although not where u are going!

Camping outside of Developed and primitive camp sites is allowed except within Restricted use areas (as shown on map) and except within 1/4 mile if developed or primitive camps. Within restricted use areas camping is allowed only in Developed or Primitive camps.

Make sure u get a map, the restricted use area are a pain in the a** if you are not familiar with the area, as the map showing restricted use areas on the back of the main map. Is fairly poor and does not show land marks very well. So its kinda hard to find where the restricted use zones begin and end. You can order the maps online from the link that was posted by the guy above. Hope this helps. Hope to see u all there.
