I made another trip back to the same area trying to match up that nice 5pt. side.No luck with that shed yet,but I found another 6 sheds and my record day on the turtle shells.(12) Three were old and either chewed or the shell busted so I let lay and one had the full outter shell.
I started the day by going to the exact spot I found the big 5pt. side my last trip.I spent the first hour an a half making passes back and forth on both sides of where the shed was found.I already covered this area the other day,but I wanted to be sure. All I found here was a dead 3pt.
I then moved my search over to where I know the deer cross through the woods to make the circle they usually run.
These woods here are full of small ridges with a flat in the middle the deer like to use. They're not very high and sometimes it's hard to see the ridge itself. It wasn't long on my first ridge when I spotted my first shed,a nice 4pt. side.
After that first shed my next find,a set were only about another 100yds. further up the flat. This was my fifth set of the year laying together.
Things were slow for awhile when I was walking the dip between two ridges when I spotted the white tines of another antler.I spotted this one a good 80 yds. up ahead of me.I thought it was strange where this one was dropped on the big rock.
There was a big gap where everything got slow for awhile when I was near the end of one of the ridges when I spotted one half buried in the leaves. It wasn't far from the last shed and I think the two might be a match.I only found this one b/c I walked over to check out a big rub and spotted this one laying about 8" from the rub.
The shed is laying somewhere between the tree and my backpack??
About a 45 minutes later I spotted another shed,my last for the day. This one looked like it was forced off alittle when it dropped. There was alittle extra skull on the base. Not near as bad as some I've found.
My shed finds for the day.The bottom center shed and the shed to the right of it I think might be a match. The brow tine was busted off on the shed to the right.
Thanks guys!! The season is slowing down, but it's not over yet.I headed back to the same spot where my last 2 hunts took place.I really want that other side to the 5pt. I found in there.
I extended my search further out and covered the same ground I've crossed back and forth at least a dozen times already. It's pretty bad when you start seeing the same rub or a couple small bones a half dozen times from a different angle. It's safe to say the 5pt. or the other mates to singles I've already found there are not where I've been looking.I've been in a core area where the deer had spent alot of time and only covered probably 1/4 of the entire woods that are there. There's alot of trails leading out of this area and everyone I've followed out ends up a dead end.I need to find that other area these deer are using.
I looked for a couple hours this day and found another 4 or 5 turtle shells and another buck skull (another spike) before I found my first shed.
When I spotted this shed it was a good ways off and had a hard time believing it was a shed til I got right up on it.It was a good one that had seen better days.It would have been great finding this one fresh.
I look for a couple hours before I find my first shed then after I get my ATL pics and start walking again I find my second shed of the day that fast. This was a nice fresh shed.I thought for sure it was the mate to one of the sheds I already found in here, turned out it was a new antler I had no mates to.
I looked for a couple more hours after these finds and came up empty on anymore sheds.I did find some more turtle shells though.
Here's the two sheds together.
Before I forget again back on my April 3rd hunt I found a third buck skull I forgot all about. You guessed it another spike.
I added 3 more little fresh sheds to the pile yesterday.
I headed back to the same area I've been hitting hard my last trips hoping to match up some singles. No luck on the singles, but added 3 more to the list with missing mates.
My first find of the day was a little spike shed and found it walking across a cut corn field of all places.I've cut across this same corn field a half dozen times at different places already getting into my area to search.
Finding that spike shed tied my best season ever numbers wise.Things were slow for a couple hours after that first find then I found a fresh 3pt. side. This shed gave me a record year for sheds found in a year.(112 sheds)
An hour later and a couple miles of walking later I found my last shed of the day.I spotted this shed a mile away.I almost think somebody hung this shed up,but can't think who would leave a nice fresh shed like this behind.I don't find many hangers, but this one seemed awful high up for a deer to leave it there??
That hanger is cool, a woman who stopped by to look at my house (its for sale) found her first, a 5 point hanger 4 feet up, like you said like someone put it there.
The numbers that you've been able to find is astonishing....and think if you could match them all up
. Is that little nubbin your smallest find ever? I've been keeping my eyes peeled in beds this year for some nubbins....definitely a conversation piece when you can find them no bigger than a quarter. Love the Hanger and great ATL's...your thread is giving me the itch to get out there again
Kurtish-believe it or not this has been my best year on matched sets and there's still a pile of singles still laying. Some the competition get, some were old sheds and some just vanish.
Yeah, that little guy is my smallest ever and one of my top 10 best finds.I find plenty of little ones.I have a pretty nice little collection of spike sheds.
I'm getting ready to head back to the area I found that little one at.The reason I was in that area to start with was b/c a monster buck had been seen there after the hunting season's were over.
Nothing from the big one running the area, but found a little old 3pt. side.
I found some huge tracks and droppings the size of jelly beans right where the big one was seen and all fresh sign too.It was one of those times you feel at any monent you'd find a shed.
I was walking in a pine thicket when my only shed was found.I was happy being a local shed and only minutes from the house.
Congrats on a great season! You sure put in the time, you are a great rolemodel for young shed hunters. Sheds don't always come easy many miles and just plain being out there creates success! Thanks for sharing your journal with us it's awsome.
That was a great compliment Bone Collector,Thanks!!
I think my 2007 shed season is offically over now,not that I have any complaints.I made one last trip and found one last old shed for the year.
I set a few new records for myself this year with numbers of sheds found in a year (115) and most matched sets in a year (18).I found my biggest typical shed which also turned out to be my biggest matched set.And I found my smallest shed I've ever found and I find my share of little ones every year.
