DFG Asking the Public for Help to Solve Antelope Poaching Case

3/2/09

The California Department of Fish and Game (DFG) requests the public's help identifying the poacher who killed five antelope on Tuesday near Herlong, in Lassen County. An anonymous person contacted DFG's CalTIP line to report three dead and two injured antelope east of Hwy. 395 and south of Herlong Access Rd. (also known as Road A25). Wardens Carol Growdon and Byron Hernandez responded and found a fourth antelope dead, and had to put down the fifth as it was mortally wounded and suffering. Two were pregnant females carrying a total of three fetuses.

"In a matter of seconds, the poacher took eight antelope out of the population," said investigating Warden Carol Growdon. "What's most troubling is the poacher made no effort to recover the animals or any part thereof. They were shot and left to suffer and die."

The fact that the poacher made no effort to recover any part of the kill could mean a person driving nearby scared the perpetrator away. Wardens are now asking the public to help by providing any information that may help identify the poacher. The animals were likely shot midday on Tuesday, Feb. 24, with a small caliber rifle from a range of several hundred yards.

Successful investigations are often the direct result of lawful hunters and anglers giving information about poaching incidents to local wardens or the toll-free CalTIP hotline. To report any information about this or any other poaching or pollution incident, please call 1-888-DFG-CalTIP (1-888-334-2258). The CalTIP number is also on the back of every hunting and fishing license. Callers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward.
