DFG COHO SALMON RECOVERY TEAM MAKES FIRST REPORT TO FISH AND GAME COMMISSION

Contact: Dirk Brazil (916) 653-7667

MONTEREY -- The California Department of Fish and Game's (DFG) Recovery Team for Coho Salmon has presented its first report to the Fish and Game Commission. The team met for the first time on Dec. 4 to establish a process and framework for working together over the next several months to aid DFG in creating a recovery strategy, and the report was presented at Thursday's Commission meeting.

"The Recovery Team brings together a group of people with very different concerns and perspectives," said DFG Director Robert C. Hight. "In working with this team, the Department expects to develop a strategy that will help recover coho salmon while minimizing adverse social and economic impacts."

The Recovery Team is composed of people representing those who would be affected by the listing of coho. Members include Indian tribes, landowners, local governments, state and federal agencies, environmental groups, and commercial and recreational anglers.

Last Aug. 30, the Commission found that coho salmon warranted listing as an endangered species from San Francisco to Punta Gorda, and as a threatened species from Puenta Gorda to the California-Oregon border, under the California Endangered Species Act. The Commission at that time directed DFG to prepare a recovery strategy for coho salmon within 12 months.

As part of the team's mission, a website, newsletter, and synopses of each meeting will be available to the public.
