The California Department of Fish and Game (DFG) is seeking nominations of commercial and sport representatives of California's ocean fisheries to fill seats on the federal Pacific Fishery Management Council (PFMC).
DFG will submit a list of qualified representatives to Gov. Gray Davis, who will ultimately select and forward the names to the assistant administration for Fisheries of the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS).
Nomination forms are available online at http://www.dfg.ca.gov/mrd/. Completed forms should be mailed by Feb. 7 to Patricia Wolf, Marine Region Manager, Dept. of Fish and Game, 4665 Lampson Ave., Suite C, Los Alamitos, CA 90720. Please note on envelope "RE: Nomination for PFMC Seat."
Nominations must include representatives of the fisheries (including the sport fishing industry) managed by the PFMC: salmon, groundfish, coastal pelagic species, and the highly migratory species fisheries. The nomination process (identified under state law) will also include consultation with fishery organizations whose members are directly affected by PFMC actions and fishery management plans.
The PFMC is charged with overseeing management plans and adopting federal regulations for numerous commercial and sport fisheries along the West Coast. The PFMC is made up of 19 members, with four at-large seats and five obligatory seats. The remainder of the Council is made up of state and federal officials.
The seats open for nominations are one California obligatory seat and two at-large seats. All have terms that expire Aug. 10. Each seat has a term of two years. James Caito, a groundfish processor, currently occupies the California obligatory seat. Caito has served for three consecutive terms and is therefore not eligible for reappointment. Don Hanson, representing the commercial passenger fishing vessel industry, is an at-large member from California. Hanson will have served in this seat for one term and is eligible for reappointment.
There are four at-large seats currently on the PFMC. One is a commercial trawl fisherman, one represents commercial longliners and two are from the recreational sector. Of the five obligatory seats, one is a processor, one is a tribal representative, two represent recreational fishermen, and one is an economist.
