It's been tough going, about a nine months since my last public land pig in Southern California. Just couldn't make it happen, but not for lack of trying. As some of you know, public land hogs in the Southland are just so darn difficult to find, and when you do find them, you gotta be able to get on 'em and make the shot. It finally came together (again) yesterday evening when after two months, I patterned three of 'em and connected on a smallish boar. Would have liked a bigger sow, but I had to get pork in the freezer, so the 125 lb. boar would have to do. A 24 yard shot at last shooting light, and he went less then twenty yards (pass thru with internal distruction). Should be a tasty one!

You sure have them figured out. Are they all black and white in there?

Yota -

No, all different colors. I did whack another BIG black and white, but I've also drilled a grey one and a cool looking cinnamon one also. I'll try to post a picture tonight. Thanks fellas, good luck to all this fall.

Here's the one you may have been thinking about. This one, if memory serves me, was 265lbs. DIY public land, Southern CA.

tips

Jeff -

I've been lucky with public land hogs here in Socal, but it's really tough to find 'em and get on 'em. Basically you'd use the same strategy as anywhere else: where there's cover, food, water, sign - there MIGHT be pigs. Find those things and then put your trail camera(s) out. It takes a fair bit of time and effort, but can be very rewarding when you're successful. Another option is to do a private land hunt at Tejon Ranch during their Pig Management hunt (www.hunttejon.com), but it'll cost you around $400.00 for a weekend. I prefer to get after it on my own, the scouting in and of itself can be fun. Hope this helps, good luck! Here's another DIY public land pig from Socal, nine months ago.
