I read the thread about the Carizzo hogs, and some of the comments made.... It brought back some painful memories !!!!
Do pigs have a 'sixth sense'? It sure seems like it!
About 3 years ago, a friend and I went hunting, determined to find some pigs, in an area where we had seen good sign.
Camping 3 whole days, we got up at 3:00 am-ish, hiked for miles in the cold, quietly, glassed, looked, hid in a tree... tried to 'spot and stalk', and even tried to flush them from the thick stuff..... NOT A SINGLE PIG was seen heard, despite all of our efforts. We tried every trick in the book, including (of course) keeping the wind in our face at all times, being super quiet, etc, etc.
Well, on the 3rd day, we decided to pack it up and go home. It was a BRIGHT sunny day, and it was HIGH NOON. We grilled some hog dogs for lunch, ate them, packed the rifles in a hard-locked box, loaded up the Jeep, and off we went...
No later than 3 minutes into the drive, and no further than 300 yards from our camp (and it's HIGH NOON!) all hell broke loose.... 6 pigs started running in all directions conceivable... within 20 yards of the Jeep.....
Completely astound, the first words out of my mouth were PIGS.... PIGS..... PIGS... followed by a WHOLE SLEW of words that I can not repeat here....
