I read the thread about the Carizzo hogs, and some of the comments made.... It brought back some painful memories !!!!

Do pigs have a 'sixth sense'? It sure seems like it!

About 3 years ago, a friend and I went hunting, determined to find some pigs, in an area where we had seen good sign.

Camping 3 whole days, we got up at 3:00 am-ish, hiked for miles in the cold, quietly, glassed, looked, hid in a tree... tried to 'spot and stalk', and even tried to flush them from the thick stuff..... NOT A SINGLE PIG was seen heard, despite all of our efforts. We tried every trick in the book, including (of course) keeping the wind in our face at all times, being super quiet, etc, etc.

Well, on the 3rd day, we decided to pack it up and go home. It was a BRIGHT sunny day, and it was HIGH NOON. We grilled some hog dogs for lunch, ate them, packed the rifles in a hard-locked box, loaded up the Jeep, and off we went...

No later than 3 minutes into the drive, and no further than 300 yards from our camp (and it's HIGH NOON!) all hell broke loose.... 6 pigs started running in all directions conceivable... within 20 yards of the Jeep.....

Completely astound, the first words out of my mouth were PIGS.... PIGS..... PIGS... followed by a WHOLE SLEW of words that I can not repeat here....

Here's a story I read a few years back.....

A guy used to see an elk feeding in a field near his house, the elk was there every day, even the day before hunting season started.
The day hunting season started he never saw the elk. Then a few days after hunting season ended, there was the elk, back in the field again.

Cheers and good hunting,

Carl

That's why it's called hunting not killing. Animals are never where you expect them to be. Keep trying, you'll get one eventually.

Sometimes you have to use that to your advantage. Think if you went through the act of packing, had one of you hide and the other drive away, you would have at least one tag filled.

Last fall, I spent 45 mins on my knees waiting a buck to get out from under an acrorn tree. When, I finally decided to move about 50 yards, after I closed the dusty see-through scope covers, grabbed the day pack and then looked up, here was the 3x3 walking around a juniper tree. He had to walk about 40 feet before I saw him. But my changing from being a "hunter" to doing something else, got him curious enough to become closely associated with my .270. I had grabbed the rifle and took him offhand at 161 yards without being able to see my crosshairs. I know my rifle and was about 2" below where I figured to aim, but a heart shot is a heart shot slighty up hill across a canyon might have been part of that as well.

When told of the story, the butcher talked of how they spotted a buck across a creek, he was about to bolt and his buddy was not ready to shoot. So they grabbed some sticks and pretended to fish. The buck started to eat his last meal.

It is not the six sense as it is taking away the immediate threat. You moved out of the pigs food area; I no longer was acting like a hunter; as were the butcher and his friend. Maybe if you guys set up camp 300 yards away from that spot, it might have taken some of the apprehension away from the pigs.

Jungleboy,

I remember you telling that story to me awhile back. The same thing almost happened to me at CR in May. It was around 7:55pm we decided to drive back to the gate. My father and grandfather pack their guns in the cases but for some reason I had mine out. I decided to walk ahead and told them to give me 10-15 and then they would catch up with the truck. Right when they caught up, I had spotten the herd of 10-12 pigs. I only had 3 bullets with me and I took only three down. Man was I glad that I decided to keep my rifle out. I guess its all luck when it comes down to situations like these.

Yep. Being at the right place, at the right time....

On another occasion, also about 3 years ago, a buddy and I decided to do a one-day hunt. We left my house early in the morning, and hit some relatively local spots (Shot: you know where I'm talking about! ) looking for some pigs...

Since we were after pigs, and not deer, we were not wearing any kind of camoflauge. Well, no sign of pigs after a 2 or 3 hour scouting, so we started to hike back.

While hiking back to the car, as we were passing a small watering hole, we saw 2 nice bucks, and about 3 does, roughly at 100+ yards out..... Again, we weren't hunting deer, so we admired the view for a few seconds, and continued to hike back.

About the last couple of hundred yards before getting to the car, we bumped into 3 deer hunters, which appeared to be very well prepared, and experienced (at least from what we gathered by talking to them). They were wearing FULL CAMO, head to toe, wearing all sorts of 'scents', and 'quiet' clothing.
They indicated that they had been camping there for 2 nights, and had been hiking up-and-down, and all over the place, but had not seen anything but only one lone doe.

We told them what we saw (but not exactly where).... but they did not take us seriously...(2 bucks ha?

gotcha..... ) Afterall, how can 2 sweaty guys, wearing blue jeans see 2 bucks in a 2 hours?

You were supposed to hunt them on hogs, not eat them!

Timing is everything. About five years ago, hunting local, I went every weekend, sun up to sundown, climbing mountains, fighting brush, glassing for hours, just giving it all I had. I never saw a legal buck that season. Opening day of the next season, it came too easy. Left the truck, walked for 20 minutes straight up a hill, sat down, waited for it to get light, and here he comes. I see a nice little 4x4 rack bouncing up over the horizon, against the gray sky. When he got to about 60 yards, he turned broadside, and pow. I was back to the truck with a dressed out 4x4, in 1 hour 15 minutes. Weird.

Ha ha... yeah, really.

Next time, instead of 'fancy' scents, etc, I will just rub hot dogs all over my clothes, and put a couple of them in my shoes, and a couple in my pockets.... seems to attract them pretty good!
