In a sign of growing drought in California, state officials recently took the unusual step of loosening environmental water quality rules in hopes of protecting salmon in the Sacramento River.

Water levels at Lake Shasta Dam are a significant concern for water officials tasked with ensuring the survival of migrating salmon this year.​

Anglers ply the waters for salmon the confluence of the American and Sacramento rivers. How water farther upstream is managed could have significant impact on the state's salmon population.​
