I tagged a fat little spike yesterday (10/30).It was the 2nd day of a 5 day season and I feel lucky to have him hanging. An earlier cow season and chukar hunters had spooked most all the elk out of my area. I hiked in to where I wanted to be before sunrise and spotted the spike a few minutes after it was light enough to see.He was all alone.I laid my pack on the rock I was glassing from for a rest and took the shot, about 300 yds.He kind of humped up and stood there about 30 seconds. He turned around then, took a few steps and stopped.I gave him another one and he took off at a fast staggering walk for about 30 yds then made a 90 and made a wobbly dash downhill for 50yds. before piling up.The 1st shot hit the liver and the 2nd put a groove in his heart. It was especially gratifying to get one this year due to nagging physical problems that had me doubting whether I could still handle an elk. This little guy was just the right size.My wife took a bunch of pics of the quartering and packing that we will post. Also, while I was packing out the quarters she found the spot where we boned out her bull last year. She took a pic of the skeleton. There is a pic of her and this bull in the current issue of Eastman's Journal.
