I tagged a fat little spike yesterday (10/30).It was the 2nd day of a 5 day season and I feel lucky to have him hanging. An earlier cow season and chukar hunters had spooked most all the elk out of my area. I hiked in to where I wanted to be before sunrise and spotted the spike a few minutes after it was light enough to see.He was all alone.I laid my pack on the rock I was glassing from for a rest and took the shot, about 300 yds.He kind of humped up and stood there about 30 seconds. He turned around then, took a few steps and stopped.I gave him another one and he took off at a fast staggering walk for about 30 yds then made a 90 and made a wobbly dash downhill for 50yds. before piling up.The 1st shot hit the liver and the 2nd put a groove in his heart. It was especially gratifying to get one this year due to nagging physical problems that had me doubting whether I could still handle an elk. This little guy was just the right size.My wife took a bunch of pics of the quartering and packing that we will post. Also, while I was packing out the quarters she found the spot where we boned out her bull last year. She took a pic of the skeleton. There is a pic of her and this bull in the current issue of Eastman's Journal.

Loye, I was hunting in N.E. Oregon
Hook, you are right. We did a tenderloin on the bbq and it was great.

My easy elk season got a lot harder yesterday. My wife decided she wanted to hunt Sat. morning (11/1).To make a long story short ,she got a huge cow after a 1 1/2 hour stalk.Nailed her in her bed from 80 yds. with a .308 Rem 600 Mohawk. Her 1st animal with that gun and she likes it better than her .243 that she has always used. I could not handle the quarters on this big animal so I boned it on the spot.I have some pics on a throw away camera of her and her elk that I will post when developed.Lots of butchering to do next week. A great season.

Way to go, OR!

Sounds like you guys won't be hurting for meat this winter. Now you just need to go shoot some birds or something to add variety.

Thanks, Spec

I plan to start on the birds right away and maybe come down for a Tejon pig hunt with you guys.
So what's up for next year? Will you be going back to the "Rocky Mountain Way"?

Hey OR,

Hope you can make it to Tejon. Don't forget about the May hunt for JHO only.

Won't be back out to the Rockies until 2005, when I'm thinking about either first rifle season again, or muzzleloader season. Sure would be cool to call one in.

Next year I'm planning to carry the bow up into your neck of the woods to chase some elk. If all goes well, my brother will be out from North Carolina to join me, as will a couple of the guys from JHO.

In the meantime, I need to add some pheasants and ducks to my winter cache. I have a little pork left from last Spring, but I'm hoping that a December trip to Camp Roberts will replenish that supply.

Shoot, at this rate all I'll need from the grocery store is veggies!
