Kris,

The area that you will hunt ar FHL depends on whether you bring a shotgun, muzzle-loader, archery, or rifle. We must use non-lead ammo.

Kris,

I started boar hunting at Liggett during the 1967-68 season, but I still don't have it figured out. That place has always been a hard nut to crack, to say the least. However, there has always been a healthy pig population at Liggett. During a lifetime of hunting I can count the pigs I have taken on one hand. Originally, it was a deserted WWII army training camp with a few tanks for demonstrating electronic warfare from silicon valley. Nowadays, it is an active U S Military training base. Expect to hear live fire.

What makes Liggett hard to figure out, is that they have controlled burns. Pigs depend heavily on dense vegetation for cover, and water for wallowing. The present combination of drought and controlled burns has changed the picture drastically, so a new hunter has equal chance of bagging a pig as the old timers who are still shaking their head.

The place has always been a four wheel drive park, so archers usually stay in Areas 1, 13E, and 29. Maybe, Area 7 would be okay for walking around with a bow? The boar of Liggett grow to be large mean old boys, so having your buddy back you up with a rifle might be a good idea?

Good luck;

Richard

Map, hit the mark dead on, great info.
It is a very big place and subject to closures or whims of the base commander's descretion as to which TAs are open.
Being a bowhunter myself, I always look for the freshest sign and start looking near the permanent water sources. The area (29) closest to the lake is usually very busy and normally would have the water. But being a drought year the ponds are low or empty and San Antonio is very low.
Good luck, it just takes time to figure out public land hunting and some of us have been at it for decades...

Check the maps on this site, #1 water, #2 cover, #3 water. You cant have hogs with out water. Then it will depend on what trainings area are open. Last weekend if im not mistaken the only one open was 29 and this year on the west side there is no water. One other thing 4X4 when it is wet is a must but becarful the roads are snot when wet a 4x4 will still get you into trouble and the base will not tow you out you will have to call outside for a tow and it will cost.

Archery Only area listed as open this weekend.

Kris,

Training Area 3 is listed as open for this weekend, and it's "Archery Only". I don't own a bow, so I can't comment. It's located above TA-7 that is considered to be one of the better areas.

Area 3 doesn't get much hunting pressure due to it being Archery. I'd hunt along the flats and borders of 2, 6, and 7. Though there is a spot up high near the private property that could hold pigs to.

yea, got their Saturday and got out to ta-3 about first light, I took a wrong turn that had me working my truck out and up a small hill for the first 2-3 hours, those dirt roads are no joke,
Fallowed tracks to a place that had shelter and water, but didn't see any rooting or poop , Sunday morning went their and saw more tracks going in their but nothing coming out for ether way on the road, seems area 7 is where thy are but not a lot of water, Be nice to drive around the roads once it drys up.
The word was 3 pigs were taken out of 7 for the weekend

Mud, mud, mud, everwhere.

Krisdude,

Well, at least you got your boots on the ground, and learned not to travel the dirt roads after a rain. Walking those dirt roads isn't good either, because, the mud sticks to the bottom of my boots. Basically, after it has rained all night at Liggett, I park on solid ground just off of a paved road. Then, I hike through the grass until I find fresh tracks on one of the many established game trails. Then, I follow the tracks into the chaparral. During the evening I stake out one of the trails with fresh tracks leading (into) the chaparral, and wait for them to come out. Dry weather requires different tactics.

After driving Friday in the rain and sleeping all night listening to the rain on the roof of my camper, I hit seven at first light. The guy in the faded red 83 Toyota truck and I used the same tactic posted above, and we converged in the chaparral just as he shot twice at the pig that we were both following. We were within 30 yards of each other, so it's a good way to get yourself shot. The pig tracks that we were both following switched from the jeep trail were I was over to the valley where he was. Neither of us was willing to give up on it. Anyway, I just talked to my boy as I dropped him off a San Jose State. He is hunting next weekend for sure, whether it rains or not. That guy prefers to glass at first light, and spot hogs as they are moving to their beds. I usually just tag along when I hunt with my boy, and he walks mile after mile for nothing. He wares me out!

I won't be back out their for a few weeks, but looks like 13E may be open this weekend and the guy at the office told me that another good spot. It's going to take a few trips to get to know the place.
so you get your pass on Friday and then you don't half to check back in until your last day of hunting. witch is nice you can get out to the spots earlier
