Well, do I feel like a lucky SOB, I drew the FHL Gen 3 Bull Tag! Any previous hunters with input will be much appreciated. I know they have an orientation, and I have heard your area to hunt still depends on what areas are open? Can you scout?

Man, I feel like a kid again, lol

I think you have priority over the areas unless they are being used for training. I would hunt the range if possible or the 13W or 13E

What's considered a good bull at FHL? I got a couple buddies lined up, and one is telling me 320" that seems high to me? What's to be expected?

Yeah, just as I thought. 320" is way high, 285" makes the book. Man, I'll need to make a hog hunt down there and do some scouting. I'm not thinking of a book bull, I was just curious cause I've never really looked at the tule elk racks much.

5x5 is the norm at FHL you can finde 6x6 or even 7 if you do your homework. and iam sure you will make the book.

Does anyone know when the military draw results will be released? They are thru the base for active duty military and match the same number of civilian draws that are specified by F&G.

Good bull is what you consider your trophy... though there are some bulls that will go book easy on the base.

We've been apart of some great bull hunts over the years... smallest was a 5x5 and largest was a 9x7... all beautiful! Hardest part will be not settling for the first bull you see, or shooting a rag horn. Put your time in to find the one you feel is right. But keep in mind the weather may help also play a role in your choice to. We've had it from icey cold but sunny, to rain, to snow. Just don't know what you're going to get until the hunt arrives.

Get up high and glass... if it's really cold (20's), like it seems to be at that time of year, groups of bulls (2-9 bulls) will like to be up on the oak ridges sunning themselves in the late morning. The trick will be finding them in an area that is legal to hunt, or catching them moving up early in the morning (if you're not hunting the tank range).

If you hunt the tank range it can be a difficult stalk. But you can also catch some bulls bedding down along the river bottom, which can give you a chance to make a long stalk on your hands, knees, and stomach. Just make sure you have a spotter with you, and another one further back.

Here's some of the bulls we've gotten over the years. First to last was... 2003 (7x7), 2005 (6x5), 2008 (9x7), 2009 (6x6), 2009 (5x5).

Mel, How the hell did you draw that tag?.....Now I'm really jealous!

All kidding aside, don't forget to look up your ol buddy L2H. He might just have a nice bull tied to a tree for ya. Ran into three groups of bulls in early May. 15, 9, and 4 bulls in each group. It is time to invest in a muzzleloader if you don't already have one.

Again congrats on the tag.
