Congrats, I have been putting in for the La Panza bull tag and not been drawn for decades.
You should do very well, as the herd is growing and they pattern very well. You can drive by today and see the herd you will be hunting.
The only draw back on hunting the bases is if they happen to close because of "security measures", usually a training exersize for the middle east...

Mel, How the hell did you draw that tag?.....Now I'm really jealous!

All kidding aside, don't forget to look up your ol buddy L2H. He might just have a nice bull tied to a tree for ya. Ran into three groups of bulls in early May. 15, 9, and 4 bulls in each group. It is time to invest in a muzzleloader if you don't already have one.

Again congrats on the tag.

Thanks L2H. Anyone know how many non hunters you can take with you to help out, and even for this hunt you can only hunt weekends right? L2H, I have too many things going on that's going to keep from buying a new gun, even as affordable as they are.....but I do have a Bday coming up before the hunt......

Day before Mel, a Friday if I remember right. They had it in the rec center. They showed a short movie on Tule elk and how the DFG is managing them. The FHL and local wardens went over how the hunt and training areas that will be open will work, how they want you to recover the elk if you have problems etc. They had area maps and other handouts. I would make sure and come with training area maps since they didn't have enough for everybody. You can download the FHL maps off the FHL page here on JHO. Took about 2 hours for the orientation.

Here a few FHL elk. The first is 3 doable bulls near the river. The second is a herd of around 200, not far from the campground. The third is 120 yds from the camp ground and the last photo is a coupla bulls, the one on the right is a 6 x gazillion

The one thing to keep in mind if you are after a certain bull or a big bull is they bend over backwards to fill all the tags. On the last weekend they opened up the closed area and let the last guys have at the elk in there. I guess it would all depend on what training is going on and where the bulls are when it comes down to the last day. I'd hold out as long as I could for a smoker bull.

Ok so I guess it wasn't a dream, got the letter today! Now just gotta get the permit and start checking the area out. Will probably start hitting up the base sometime in September and try to go once a month until the hunt.

Ok, so here's a question, hope someone knows the answer. When hunting with a muzzle loader in the primitive areas, can you have a scope? Since my tag is a GEN tag, would this make a difference and allow me to use a scope or are the primitive areas No Scope no matter what?

Thanks guys for all the help so far, you have been great!

This is all im finding under the DFG website, but it seems to refer to if it's a muzzle loader rifle tag. This was under the Gen Public Elk tag information. Still not clear to me....

(f) Under the provisions of a muzzleloading rifle only tag, hunters may only possess muzzleloading rifles as described in subsection 353(a) equipped with open or “peep” type sights only.

If I remember it right Mel, scope on ML was OKAY on FHL. That question came up in the orientation and I think I asked it on here too from last years hunt. FHL operates under the DFG rules but they also have some exceptions they only for FHL.

I also sent you my friend Jimmy Rizzos number via email, he can help with calling the elk if you want. He's helped quite a few elk hunters there the past years and is a great elk caller.

gdt, congrats to your son! Im sure we will see each other.

Jesse, I called the base and they did say I could use a scope on the ML. I didn't see an email from you? Are the Elk rutting in December to where calling will work?

Thanks for the help!

The Elk won't be rutting in December... they rut much earlier. That's why you'll see a lot of rag horn bulls during that hunt. So don't think calling will be that productive. We've never had to call on any of the bull hunts we've been apart of there at that time of year.

Mel, for the general hunt, you can use a muzzleloader with a scope. Even in TA's that are restricted to muzzleloader/archery. For an actual muzzleloader tag hunt through the state/base the muzzleloader cannot have a scope and must be open sights. The muzzy bull hunt is beginning of Nov. I believe.

If you know how to call you can call animals all year round. Its a lot easier to have them come to you then you chasin them all over hill and dale. To each his own as they say.
