FHL New Year's Hunt

Hey All,
I'll be joining fellow JHO's at Byson Hesperia Lodge/Cabins over the New Year's (black Tundra). Wondering what the weapon of choice will be for most - rifle or bow....? And for you fellow FHL veterans (my first time there) all things considered, which do you think would give a hunter better odds of scoring a pig, a bow in the bow/shotgun/muzzle loader T.A.'s or a rifle in the other T.A.'s .....and has anyone done both on any given weekend....? Wife and I will be there. I am curious, has anybody recieved confirmation back from FHL on dates, and application? They recieved my package on the 18th, have not heard from them, but have email into them as of today.

Feathers and Cabo, I received an e-mail confirmation from FHL about a week after I sent the application and cashiers check. Maybe they have a back log or something. I'll see you guys there (black Tundra and a red Ford Escape SUV) - looking forward.

I didn't know if you all saw my post from FHL so I thought I'd post it here. You can change TA's - you might want to hunt for one thing one day and another thing the next day - so bring all your stuff (well maybe leave the elephant caliber stuff at home) Note: pigeon season closes the 24th, dove the 25th.


Fort Hunter Liggett Hunting and Fishing Update for December 20th 2006 thru January 1st 2007.
1. Information regarding training areas and reservoirs available for hunting and fishing, as well as registration hours is usually posted on our web site www.liggett.army.mil and on the recorded information phone line (831) 386-3310 by 5:00 pm on Thursdays each week.
2. All permit applications will be accepted by mail only.
3. Hunting opportunities through January 1 include: Quail, ducks, geese, Wild Pig, Jackrabbit, Tree squirrel Coyote, Bobcat, Cottontail, dove, Band-tailed pigeon, Period 2 Antlerless elk, and Period 3 Bull Elk. Note: Some of the escaped buffalo are on FHL. They are livestock not wildlife, and are someone’s property. DO NOT shoot any buffalo. If you see any buffalo please let us know about your sighting.
4. Training areas available for general hunting Wednesday December 20th through Sunday December 24th and Wednesday December 27th through Monday January 1st, 2007 include: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10/13, 11, 14, 17, 18, 19, 23, 26, 27, 28, 29, and 30. TAs 29 and 30 are park and walk only areas, and are restricted to archery, shotguns, and muzzle loading weapons only. Training area 3 is archery only. Training areas available for elk tag holders only include 9, 12B, 15, 16, 24, and 25.
5. Reservoirs open for fishing December th through December 24th and from December 27th through January 1st include: Coleman, Milpitas, Del Venturi, Gravel Pit, Hughes, Woodrow, El Piojo, Sycamore, Twin Valley, and KD.
6. Anglers register at the Environmental Office Bldg 238 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on business days when the Hunting and Fishing Center is closed. Hunting & Fishing Center located on Alamo Road near the Fort Hunter Liggett main gate will be open for business from 6:00am to 2:30pm on all open days from December 20th through January 1st. FHL will be closed to hunting and fishing on December 25 and 26, 2006.
7. Due to Military training requirements or security reasons, training areas and reservoirs may be closed without notice.

CABOWHNTR, .44 mag pistol ? I'm not positive but I thought that I read that no handgun's were allowed on base.

Hi Dirtpoor, Bryson Resort here,
FHL Firearms Rules:
4. Firearms:
4.1Handguns may be used per state regulations, but must have barrels 6" (six inches) or longer and be .38 caliber or larger (.243 or larger in rifle caliber used for handguns). Handguns in a vehicle must be in a locked container and unloaded (chamber and magazine).
4.2 Rifles of 22 rimfire-caliber are allowed only for hunting tree squirrel and rabbitt.

that way when you get here everything will be done and you wont get held up at the game shack

Good morning hope you all had a very Merry Christmas. We're gearing up for you guys here, can't wait to meet everyone.
.22's are allowed on Fort Hunter Liggett for tree squirrel and rabbit -
I'll put pamphlets in the cabins so we're all good on the FHL rules - meeting with FHL Biologist tomorrow and get everyone squared away with permits- Posted TA hot spots on BHR web page, and I'll get updates tomorrow too hopefully we'll knock 'em dead... I want lots and lots of pictures don't forget your cameras...

My THANKS to Deedy and Karin also. I'll be bringing the Howa 30.06 and the Mathews Switchback XT. My girlfriend will be going on the wine tasting outing on Saturday (assuming it's still a go) so if anyone would like to buddy up for a bow or rifle hunt that day give me a shout. Looking forward to a fun weekend.

We're hunting for pigs and quail. I'm bringing my GSP, Jaeger, to chase the birds. But would really like to get a pig. Anyone know how the Quail numbers are? A friend of mine told me Camp Roberts had a lot of birds same for FHL?

Are you guys going hunting on Saturday, or doing the pig clinic?

Weather looks good, partly cloudy, but no rain in the forecast through Sunday.
Wild1, I'll hook up with you if you need a partner, I am solo on the hunting. Wife will be going on the wine tasting as well.

Upland, the pig clinic looks interesting, no doubt I could stand to learn a few things. I'm for sure going hunting Saturday and Sunday, don't know if I can make it back in the afternoon for the clinic and then back to FHL for a late afternoon hunt - we'll have to see, but hunting is the priority. Feathersnhoof, I'll be in black Tundra and I'm bringing a bow and a 30.06. - I'll see ya there.
