Seems like a few folks on get over to Fort Hunter Liggett for pig hunting fairly often. I'm think of getting a permit for the season myself and giving it a try late fall through early spring. I just had a few offbeat questions for the regulars...
1) Any experience with FHL unloaded weapon transport regs and detachable magazines? If my Tikka T3 is riding unloaded and empty in a hard case but it's detachable mag is stuffed with shells yet fully detached and riding in my pack or pocket are the MPs or wardens gonna write me up? Seems this rule is supposed to mirror California law in which case a fully detached and separated mag although itself loaded should be legal...
2) What are the dining options on base like? Any decent places to grab a bite if I'm not feeling like camp chow?
Thanks in advance for the input.

Pig only annual permit is $110.and to answer your questions.
1.If your not hunting, same as california law if your at the base. gun inside soft or hard case. ammo separated.
If you are hunting gun in soft or hard case unloaded . ammo can be on your pocket .in loose or in the magazine. i carry two loaded browning magazine on my pocket every time.
2.the only food you can buy at the base are sandwiches.unless you have an I D .
There is a restaurant in lockwood about 5 miles if you want hot food. or 20 miles to king city.

You can buy a pizza at the bowling alley, and there is a grill down by the rec center that serves sandwiches and burgers. Both places serve civilians, and on Friday/Saturday night you can enjoy a free movie at the theater. They have snack food cheap. The bar is open as well at night, but no food there unless something special is going on. It is very entertaining to watch drunken army folks try their hand at karaoke, though......

As far as transporting weapons, make sure they are cased with ammo stored separately.

If you are going into the cantonment area (through the gate/guard shack), make sure your cased weapon is out of sight (not within your reach) and same goes for any ammunition. Most of the fort police are pretty reasonable, but occasionally you will get a real yahoo at the gate. One saw my cased rifle and box of ammunition and implied that could be grounds for an arrest/shooting (as in me being shot) since it was within my reach, and stated grounds pertaining to Federal Law. I stated that since I was in a truck without a trunk, would anywhere in my cab be "within reach"? Anyhoo...slightly tempting to argue federal law with the guy, but sometimes best to agree and move on. So, just be careful in that regards at the gate/in the cantonment area. YMMV.

Overall though, most of the rules are common sense and straight forward. For instance, when you are driving in a training area off the main pave roads during hunting hours, you still will need to have your weapon cased, but you can have your ammunition at the ready as long as it is not in the gun. Things get more stringent as far as where you keep your cased weapon and ammo the closer you get to that guard gate.

My experiences anyways...hope that helps.

Thanks guys! Sounds like a workable situation to me. Camping out on BLM land off Coalinga road gets old after a while so I don't mind driving a bit further, dropping a little change, and following a few extra rules in exchange for a safe, high quality hunting experience. I'm sure I'll have to put in plenty of time getting to know the place before I take my first pig, but having some amenities nearby will keep me at it.

I don't think ammo can be in a clip in a vehicle. Check the regs.

Yes you can if you are in the hunting area and hunting.but not inside the cantonment area as i stated above. or if you are not hunting and just driving inside the base.(visiting the mission or passing through the base driving to the cost)

FHL regulations,
Page 7
3-5 Weapons Safety

b. Firearms shall not have unexpended cartridge or shell in or attached to the firearm, including the firing chamber,
magazine or clip while in a vehicle on FHL.

Again read the regs.

Magazine can be loaded as long as magazine is not attached to rifle. Checked by Warden and base police on several occasions while hunting or driving between areas in the past with loaded but detached magazine with no issue.

Even if rifle is not loaded, a cased rifle in the front seat with you will get LE fuming.

Inside the cantonment is a different story. As noted, just be extra careful when going inside.

We keep our weapons in our jeeps cased and ammo and mags if any in our pockets. No different than anyone else.
