Anyone going? How's the new gun reg working out? I called today, lady was pretty short with me, looking for a way to register my weapon without having it to stash it along the roadside outside the base.

Stash it, theres a lot of trees out by the old tank. pick one, remember it and head in.
It takes about 20 mins and it's easy.

Can you go into the campground and leave your weapons in your trailer and then drive into register them?

I would think so, theres nobody checking before the guard station. thats where they will turn you away. not before.

I'd find out for sure, you're ON FHL when you enter by the tank off Jolon Rd. If they want to pick nits you will lose.

I think I'm going to end up hunting FHL this weekend (11-12) with my buddy. He's in a wheelchair though... Anyone know if 1) the lodging on FHL is hadicap friendly and 2) if there's anywhere to hunt on FHL that my friend could hunt on. I know he can hunt from the truck as long as I'm not hunting but sometimes we can find places where we can set up and glass a good area.. Anyone familiar with FHL have some suggestions? Also, not dead set on FHL if anyone has other suggestions I'm open.. We're going for pig.

Thanks!

is this registration thing also for compound bows

Yea, bows too!

Lot of unanswered questions so I ended up staying closer to home and soaking up a little overtime at work...Sure would be nice if you could fax or email the registration form.

@1USD- Sorry, wish I could offer some help on a nearby spot for you guys, good luck. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will be able to give you some good info.

USD1, all the rooms I've been in at Gibbs Hall WERE NOT handicap friendly. No ramps and no elevator for 2nd floor either. 20 mins to Kings City will get you a room there cheaper than Gibbs Hall even.

On hunting I'm trying to remember seeing a hunter in a wheelchair or hunting from a vehicle and can't remember any. Looking at teh FHL regs there nothing about disabled hunters but they sell a reduced price disabled hunter permit.

Thanks for the info.. Especially on the rooms. We're coming down from the Sacramento area and I had hoped to find a place that's a little closer to us to hunt. Even Hollister BLM land but the issue with that is I don't know how many roads (even access roads) that we would have access to. He has a permit that allows him to hunt from his van (a big, lifted 4x4 van so gas $$ was the other issue haha). Weighing the options.... A 4 hour drive, lots of gas $$, permit fees, pig tag, lead free ammo... FHL is definitely the expensive route to go but I think it would provide him the best hunting opportunity. Thanks for all the info!!

If you are going to spend all that money on gas be sure you are familiar with the weapons registration requirements. You cannot drive into the cantonment area with guns in the vehicle. There is a process now for sending in weapons registration but it is I think at least a 10 day turnaround. Talk to the police ops center listed on the weapons registration memo here (right side of the page) : http://www.liggett.army.mil/sites/fishhunt/update.asp

A lot of people are confused and don't or won't comprehend the new requirements, show up and get turned away so save yourself some time and have a plan to register whether it be a seperate trip, send in by mail or bring two vehicles and one guy stays at hotel with guns, one guy registers, switch. As for disabled hunting from a vehicle there should be allowance for that, check with the wardens. 25 and 15 come to mind as TAs where you could roadhunt if allowed and certainly drive to a hilltop and post up if it is not allowed.

Good luck.

From my understanding you can have your buddy shoot from the truck but you will need to talk with the game warden on base to clear it. Also I was told that you do not need to register your bow. Only firearms at this point. Hope this helps.

Thank you all, very helpful. I actually did some calculations for gas, food, lodging, permits etc. and it looks like we'll be in for $250-$300 each. We decided to go ahead with FHL for this weekend. I had thought about the weapon registration.. We're going to drive down Friday and register the weapons on Friday then hunt Sat-Sun.. Here's the BIG question... My buddy doesn't have any lead free ammo for his gun (7mm) I have multiple rifles with lead ammo.. Since we now have to register weapons, will he be allowed to use one of my guns..? I'm sure I will have to call tomorrow to find out and when I have the answer I will let you all know :)

As I'm reading through the FHL regulations, one obstacle I clearly see will be the requirement for weapons to be locked in a case and unloaded while in a vehicle.. I guess I'll just have to get really fast at uncasing his gun! LOL. BTW. He has a special permit that allows him to shoot from the vehicle. In case you were wondering.. I cannot hunt while he hunts, I can only retrieve game for him.. So, hopefully he shoots one quick so I can go out and bag one too :)

I wish I could help you 1USD but I've never been asked about disabled hunters there before. FHL follows most of the DFW regs but they do have some differences and the cased/locked gun is one. Please post what you find out and I'll put the info on our FHL page so others can use it in the future.

Give a shout out to Live2Hunt here, he's one of the FHL regluars and he can help steer you to an area with the best chance at a shot from your friend's van. I haven't been up in a couple months and really can't offer any fresh area info.

SO

I talked to Game Warden Look and he said that the only requirment for FHL is that the weapon be registered there so there should be no issue with loaning the weapon to my friend to use. (again, the context of the situation is that I am with my friend at the time of the hunt). Also, both the Warden and the lady (forgot her name) from FMWR said that my friend could hunt from the vehicle with his special permit.

Looks like FHL is the spot. I will keep you guys posted.

Does anyone know of any other hunting areas near king city? we're heading down Thursday night so after we register the guns Friday morning we're free to hunt but the 2 day pass isn't good until Saturday.. :(

Thanks, good to know, the memo said it needed to be "hand carried" but I guess it cant hurt to try mailing it. Out of curiosity, how do you know it was approved, they contacted you?

Do we send the form to the same address we sent for our permit or is it the address of the station we register the guns? I assume the latter?

For that $, I'd add a couple hundred $ more and take disable dad on a guided hunt an hour or two north of Sac.
