SACRAMENTO RIVER, Redding--Fishing for trout and steelhead continued to be very good, with trout working over the declining number of salmon spawning beds for eggs and stirred-up caddis and Mayfly nymphs. That was occurring higher in the river between Redding and Anderson. Odds for catching a steelhead were better below Anderson. Spin and conventional fishermen, backtrolled small Hot Shots and drifted Glo-Bugs. Fly fishers drifted egg patterns and micro-Mayflies, copper Johns and prince nymphs under indicators.
KLAMATH/TRINITY RIVERS
KLAMATH RIVER, Happy Camp--The mid- and upper river seemed to be providing most of the good fishing for steelhead last week. Anglers were catching several adults to 6 pounds per day plus numerous half pounders by swinging beadhead assassins, backtrolling small Hot Shots and drifting roe were all productive.TRINITY RIVER, Junction City--Steelhead fishing continued to improve with experienced anglers getting 3 to 6 hookups a day on flies and spinners. Fish ranged from 4 to 8 pounds, and they were being taken on everything from nightcrawlers to Copper Johns.
DELTA
SACRAMENTO RIVER side--Riverside Bait at Vieira's Resort said nice sized stripers to 8 pounds, with plenty of smaller schoolies coming in by trolling shallow running Yo-Zuri's in Montezuma and Cache sloughs, The deep water channel, Sandy Beach, and Decker Island. Some sturgeon were also being reported but with more over-sized than keepers. An 83 incher was caught on the pier at Isleton. Ghost shrimp and pile worms worked well.SAN JOAQUIN RIVER side-- JD Richey Sportfishing Charters said Pencil Poppers, Zara Spooks and Lucky Craft Sammies in shad patterns early and late in the day and switching to swimbaits on the sunny days has been good for schoolie-sized stripers averaging 8 pounds, with an occasional larger one. Try Frank's Tract, False River, or Fisherman's Cut.
SIERRA LAKES/RIVERS
BOCA LAKE--Brian Nylund at Mountain Hardware and Sports in Truckee said some fishermen have been getting good rainbows at the dam area, picking up 'bows from 14 to 18 inches. He said some Mackinaw have been in the inlets. Fishing the points can be productive, as well.CAPLES LAKE--Recent rains have helped the lake some. Dave Kirby at Woodfords Station in Woodfords said the lake level has come up by a couple feet.DAVIS,LAKE--Occasional rains have made fishing a bit less enjoyable for anglers at times, but the rainbow bite has been holding strong. Trollers can pick up fish in the dozens pulling trolling flies, Needlefish and Krocodiles. Fly fishing has slowed some, but Mosquito Slough, Freeman and Jenkins are still productive when the breeze stirs the surface a bit. The bank-fishing bunch continue to catch fair numbers of 'bows at Fairview and Mallard.DONNER LAKE--Bank fishers still picking up some planter rainbow fishing bait off the public docks on the west side. Shawn Bottomly with Hook-Up Guide Service in Truckee said he caught a couple browns trolling AC-Plugs. He said Mackinaw can be seen on the graph, but just won't bite.FRENCHMAN LAKE--Floating nightcrawlers just up from bottom has been working well for bank anglers at Lunker Point. Either blow 'em up or add marshmallows for the lift. Fly fishing has been good for fishermen using just about any kind of green bug, but the action ends Saturday, Nov. 15, when the regular stream fishing season closes.ICE HOUSE RESERVOIR--Hot rainbow action continues here, with many anglers limiting on fish up to 16 inches. Try trolling dark-colored grubs, Needlefish, Panther Martins, Kastmasters or just nightcrawlers. The bite could continue until snowfall shuts off access to the lake.JENKINSON LAKE(SlyPark)--Lake planted early in the week with rainbows running from 8 to 15 inches. Jim Cozzens at Sly Park Resort said the plant stirred up rainbow action on the lake, and smallmouth action also picked up. He said one bass fisherman, Buddy, nailed 3 nice smallies, all in the 2-pound range, using plastic worms. Cozzens said the second boat launch ramp has been closed and the first ramp is only good for small boats, due to the dropping lake level.PROSSER LAKE--Lake level low. Anglers can pick up some rainbow in the dam area. Also try the Prosser Creek inlet. One of the best spots is in the area of the concrete dam.PYRAMID LAKE--Weather has been putting a crimp in the cutthroat action here. Carla Molino at the Pyramid Lake Store said wind has kept boaters off the lake at times, but shore fishermen have been getting some fish, just nothing big. Fly fishermen have also been getting some of the cutts, a good sign the fish are starting to move in closer to shore. She said water temperatures are still a bit too warm. At Crosby Lodge, Jared Coleman said no cutthroat of any size have been checked in, but another big carp was. He said a fly fisherman caught a 20-pound carp that hit a fly while he was fishing at Popcorn.STAMPEDE RESERVOIR--Decent numbers of small Mackinaw starting to bite now. The lake is turning over and Shawn Bottomly with Hook-Up Guide Service in Truckee said he's been catching macks up to 6 pounds top-lining Rapalas and AC-Plugs. Mack action expected to really turn on as the lake settles down. Anglers have been picking up some fish between the dam and the island at 50 to 60 feet deep.LAKE TAHOE--Mackinaw action continues pretty good between periods of gusty wind conditions. Mickey Daniels with Mickeys Big Mack Charters in Carnelian Bay said he has been doing alright when the northwest wind stays down. With charters of up t 9 people on board, he's been getting fish for everybody, as well as tagging and releasing good numbers of other fish. Macks have been running up to 9 pounds currently.TRUCKEE RIVER--River closes to regular stream fishing on Saturday, Nov.15. It opens to zero-limit, catch-and-release, artificial lures with barbless hooks only fishing the following day, Sunday, Nov.16. Brian Nylund at Mountain Hardware and Sports in Truckee said anglers on the river have been doing pretty good with dark colors like red nymphs. Lures like small Kastmasters and dark Panther Martins have also been producing. He said single barbless hooks work better than barbless treble hooks, the trebles working out of the fish's mouth easier.
NORTHERN FOOTHILLS
AMERICAN RIVER--Lots of rain has kept most anglers out of the area. River above Highway 49 closes Nov.15 with the end of the trout season, but will remain open for catch and release fishing with artificial lures with a single, barbless hook.BULLARDS BAR--Not too busy here with few anglers out on the lake. Some trout and small spotted bass are being caught. The lake has come up a little with the rain and there is good launching available.CAMP FAR WEST--Launching for small boats only on the old dirt ramp. Very little pressure on the lake but one angler who was out for bass reported catching some good fish on jigs.COLLINS LAKE--Some trout being caught by both shore anglers and trollers. Shore anglers reported in with fish to 3 pounds on worms by the dam. Trollers are running flasher/worm combos 10 feet deep in the lower lake. Not much angling pressure here lately with the weather.ENGLEBRIGHT RESERVOIR--Lake is only 7 feet from the spillway. Trollers are working the lower part of the lake from Buck's Beach to the dam with flasher/ worm combos at 15 to 20 feet for trout up to 14 1/2 inches.FRENCH MEADOWS RESERVOIR--Weather has kept most people out of the higher elevations lately so there are no current reports available. Water level came up with all the rain but some water has been put into Hell Hole to keep the water at an acceptable level.HELL HOLE RESERVOIR--Water level is up onto the concrete ramp with water being pumped in from French Meadows. No current fishing reports with very little angling pressure.LAKE OROVILLE--Launching is at the Spillway "launch-at-your-own-risk" ramp. 4-wheel drive required and no fees are being collected at the gate. If you can get launched, the bass and catfish are hitting. Cats to 9 1/2 pounds are coming out of the forks on anchovies and bass are hitting drop-shot worms, jigs and tubes in 30 to 35 feet of water. Some fish to 6 pounds weighed in recently.STUMPY MEADOWS RESERVOIR--Anglers are trying for browns up in the inlet area of the lake trolling Rapalas.THERMALITO AFTERBAY--Lots of big steelhead being caught off the shore on minnows and trolling Sling Blade rigs with some fish weighed in recently in the 7- to 9-pound class. Water level has come up 2 to 3 feet and bass anglers are doing well on minnows near shallow structure with fish to 3 pounds coming in.
NORTHEASTERN AREA
MOST STREAMS AND RIVERS CLOSE ON NOVEMBER 15. Pit River below Lake Britton remains open to ZERO kill, barbless hooks, and artificials only from November 16, thru April 24, 2009.BAUM LAKE-- BWO's and Mahogany duns worked best for dries, while copper Johns in green, Don's bug, midges, and woolly buggers are doing well for nymph fishermen. Lure fishermen are doing well on just about anything. Bait fishermen still do best on nightcrawlers or Power Bait.BRITTON LAKE--According to Vaughn's Sporting Goods there is no currant report but the Pit River below Lake Britton will remain open with a ZERO kill, barbless hooks, and artificials only from November 16, thru April 24, 2009. Check your DFG Regulation book to make sure what the rules are before heading out.CASSEL FOREBAY--Hook ups are being found on BWO's, Mahogany duns and callibaetis seem to be doing the trick for dries, while copper Johns in green, Don's bug, and midges are doing well for nymph fishermen. Bait fishermen are using nightcrawlers and salmon eggs. Bait fishermen are using nightcrawlers and salmon eggs. Lure fishermen are doing best on Rooster Tails and Panther Martins.EAGLE LAKE--Good fishing continues at both end and with all techniques, though trolling seems to be the most popular as fish are on the move.FALL RIVER--Don't forget, streams and rivers close on November 15 in the Sierra District, so check the regs. Fishing was still good with reports showing any dry or wet fly in olive working best.HAT CREEK (wild trout section)--Not too many reports as the catching has been slow at best. There are some decent hatches of BWO's and mahogany's, but not too much action.PIT RIVER-- Black AP's, golden stones, rubber-leg prince are all doing very well. Good reports in the Pit 5 area.LAKE SHASTA--The bass bite is improving with a few larger fish and more of them coming in. Topwater, swim baits, or ripbaits will be good choices in the first mile or so in the arms but it gets very shallow in there quickly so points in the main body are also popular. The Packers and Bridge Bay areas produced limits of trout averaging 15 to 16 inches from the surface down to 10 feet on Cripplures and Hum Dingers in UV patterns in silver colors and the Fire Tiger Cripplure.- Western Outdoor Newswww.wonews.com
