TOP PICKS
LAKE DAVIS - Fishing here is way out of the norm for this time of year. Instead of falling off into the dog days of summer, the rainbow bite was hot for trollers. The damsel hatch was strong, and fly-fishers caught and released big ones.TRINITY RIVER, Douglas City - Salmon fishing improved. Most fish were caught on both roe and a Puffball and Kwikfish. Fish weighed 8 to 25 pounds. Call (800) 427-7623 for road conditions before making the trip - be prepared for Highway 299 closures between the coast and Redding because of fires.EMERYVILLE - Halibut action was good, and Farallon Islands bottomfishing trips were great, and included some lings. The big counts of halibut came from the South Bay, but there were lunkers caught on main bay spots as well, with a 33-pounder big fish of the week taken on the New Seeker on Saturday.ENGLEBRIGHT RESERVOIR - The trout bite was great. Trolling was the best bet because of the lack of shore fishing access, and boaters have used flashers with bait or small spoons for planter-size fish. Bass have hit the trout trollers.CAMANCHE LAKE - Bait trout fishing was great for anglers anchoring in the main lake and soaking Power Bait. Dike 3 was a hot spot. The Speece cone has been on, oxygenating water near the dam, and that usually adds to the action. Bass action was better, with lots of active spotted bass and some big largemouths reported. Top tactic was top-water in the early morning and small plastic worms fished 4 to 18 feet down later in the day. Catfish was rated very good at Campers Cove and in the Causeway Arm. Try mackerel, chicken liver and anchovies.
