TOP PICKS
• FOLSOM LAKE - Pleasant fishing conditions continued to combine with a good bass bite. The topwater and near topwater (buzzbaits, swimbaits) bite was especially good early and late, and produced larger fish. Switch to shad- or dark-patterned plastics and fish over rockpiles and channel edges on the main body during the day, then go shallow at night.• SACRAMENTO RIVER, Sacramento - The stretch from Freeport to Verona wasn't a dead zone for stripers last week. Fishing picked up for the first time in months around Verona with anglers catching smallish stripers on bait. A more reliable bet was going for catfish wherever the river slowed in the many sloughs.• SACRAMENTO RIVER, Knight's Landing--It's true as this WON Staffer found out first hand. There's some pretty good striper fishing from Knight's Landing to Colusa, but here's the kicker: The biggest--some well over 20 pounds--and most fish are being caught by anglers throwing big streamers. Minnows are accounting for some, but not nearly as many as being caught on the fly.• LAKE BERRYESSA - Another two or three weeks of good koke action should be found now in the Narrows as they make their way to the dam. T-Roy's Guide Service said anglers could expect limits with blue/white or green/white hoochies and some Koke Special or Carp Spit with garlic Pro Cure scent and a 3/0 dodger. The depths to target: 50 to 75 feet. • CARSON RIVER (East, West) - There was good fishing in both rivers, though the fish plants might be somewhat depleted. Now, with cooler temperatures and smaller crowds, fishing will get better and more enjoyable. More trout plants were slated for this week and next.
