LAKE BERRYESSA-- Anglers are still trolling for trout in 15 - 20 feet or drifting with live minnows and a bobber with a 6- to 7-foot leader or slip-bobber. The topwater bass bite has been pretty good in the early morning as long as you can find shadows but the drop-shot bite has been non-existent. Also an option, try Lipless crankbaits, Brush Hogs or a popper.UPPER BLUE LAKE--With a recent plant, the cooler waters should help bring on a good bite. Try Wedding Rings, Kastmasters or worms in the top 20 feet.LAKE SONOMA--Drop-shot worms found bass at the north end, up in the creeks. Look for grass lines too, and toss in a frog in the morning, later on, black jigs will be a better option.
KLAMATH/TRINITY RIVERS
KLAMATH RIVER, Klamath Glen--A few salmon were still trickling in, but numbers were well down from earlier. Crowds were gone too, so anglers had the river pretty much to themselves, and a few more steelhead were being caught, but many anglers were disappointed in a season that in no way lived up to the projections. There was quite a bit of rumbling that quotas were set far beyond what they should have been, allowing far more salmon to be netted at the mouth than should have been. As one anglers said, "When you put up a wall of nets and leave them there, what do you expect?"KLAMATH RIVER, Iron Gate--The days are numbered for salmon fishing because many are now spawning in the river, but there were quite a few being caught below the dam, mostly on roe, although Kwikfish were scoring before the sun comes up. Small steelhead were starting to be caught in larger numbers behind spawning salmon, mostly on Glo-Bugs. A piece of nightcrawler backtrolled behind a No. 35 Hot Shot has also been effective.KLAMATH RIVER, Orleans--Fishing for small steelhead and some adults to 5 pounds has started to improve. Anglers were drifting nightcrawlers and swinging flies and Little Cleos.TRINITY RIVER, Willow Creek--No other way to put it--fishing was lousy last week, old timers have been lamenting the low number of both salmon and steelhead--certainly compared to last year, and compared with the estimates by DFG.TRINITY RIVER, Junction City--Fishing continued to be poor with low numbers of steelhead and salmon. However, anglers willing to persevere have been able to catch the occasional steelhead and salmon. However, most of the salmon being caught now are getting pretty dark. The best fishing has been from Del Loma to Junction City.
SIERRA LAKES/RIVERS
BLUE LAKES--Good fishing reported here. Dave Kirby at Woodfords Station in Woodfords said both Upper and Lower lakes had great action producing lots of limits. He said fishermen caught some hungry fish, mostly on worms.BOCA LAKE--Anglers trolling the inlets have been using orange-pattern Krocodiles and Needlefish. Other anglers fishing the dam area have had success with crawfish pattern Countdown Rapalas. Others have been jigging for bigger rainbows and browns holding on the bottom. Anglers casting lures to the fish have been using small spinners and Kastmasters in dark colors.CAPLES LAKE--Repairs to dam outflow works are done now and water to be released from temporary bladder dam. Dave Kirby at Woodfords Station in Woodfords said a big clean-up of the lake area was held over the weekend and local youngsters collected bags and bags and bags of trash.CARSON RIVER(East,West)--West Carson very low, but there are lots of fish, offering a real challenge to fishermen. East Carson has better flows and fishing has been very good. Chad Machado at Carson River Resort near Markleeville said lots of people are fly fishing now and doing very good.DAVIS,LAKE--Plenty of rainbow action here whether fly fishing, trolling or just dunking bait off from the bank. Plenty of fish running 16 to 22 inches have been caught, and enough fish larger than those have been caught to keep expectations high. Boat launching still available at the Honker ramp, but water is below the ramp a bit and 4x4 vehicles are advised.DONNER LAKE--Anglers fishing from public docks along the west side of the lake have been getting plenty of action from smaller planter rainbows. Some Mackinaw running 1 to over 3 pounds also reported coming close to shore. No bigger macks reported caught by those fishermen who have been jigging for them.FRENCHMAN LAKE--Lake level down and docks are out of the water now, but bank fishing has been very good at Lunker Point and Turkey Point. Nightcrawlers, as well as chartreuse and rainbow Power Bait have been working for bank fishers. Frenchman Campground is still open for dry camping.INDIAN CREEK RESERVOIR--Fishing rated only fair, and the campground is closed now. Warm surface temps are blamed for slowing the bite.JACKSON MEADOW RESERVOIR--Water still dropping and fishing the dam area has been hit or miss at best. Needlefish, Rapalas and Krocodiles have been producing some action for trollers.JENKINSON LAKE (SlyPark) - Good weather and open campgrounds were bonuses, and anglers got some decent action, according to Jim Cozzens at Sly Park Resort. He said most of the bite came from rainbows, but nothing real big. Smallmouth action slowed, but the bass bite will return. Lake level was down and ramps were usable. The second ramp is recommended as the better of the two available.LOON LAKE--Rainbow bite rated pretty good, with occasional browns being caught. Lake level low now and launching reported no longer advisable, even if at all possible. Try inflated nightcrawlers off the bottom or Power Bait. Casting out with small Kastmasters can also work.PROSSER LAKE--Fishing the area where the creek comes into the lake at the campground has been productive for anglers using a variety of baits. Power Bait, salmon eggs and nightcrawlers have been working, as well as throwing dark-colored spinners in the morning and changing to brighter colors during the day.PYRAMID LAKE--Colder weather has kicked off the cutthroat bite and some cutts in the 10-pound range have been caught. Good numbers of fish running 6, 7 and 8 pounds have been caught by both trollers and shore fishermen. The action is expected to only get better now.SILVER LAKE--Dave Kirby at Woodfords Station in Woodfords said two fishermen in a boat did real well here, catching 3 Mackinaw up to 4 pounds and some browns, none of them real big. Kirby said the fishermen caught and released way more than limits of fish for the day. They were fishing minnow-imitation lures. Lake level is low and below the end of the launch ramp. Only smaller boats can launch now.STAMPEDE RESERVOIR--Action very slow here. Kokanee fishing is about done. A few fishermen have been catching some rainbows and browns, these fish have been small in size and few in number. Overall, fishing has been tough at best. Lake level very low.LAKE TAHOE--Mackinaw fishing a challenge. Chuck Self with Chuck's Charter Fishing in Zephyr Cove said he has been getting limits of macks for his clients, but the fish are pretty well scattered all over the lake and at all depths. He has been getting macks anywhere from 120 to 415 feet deep. Most of the fish have been averaging 4 to 6 pounds. He did have a 9 pounder caught on a recent trip. For Mackinaw try spoons, Sting Kings, J-Plugs and Apex lures.TRUCKEE RIVER--Anglers fishing the unregulated stretch of river from Trout Creek to Tahoe City have been catching decent numbers of small rainbows and few fair-sized browns. Small spinners have been working. Water is real low now in the regulated parts of the river, improving downstream from Boca all the way to Stateline. Fly fishing good; try October caddis, grasshoppers and standard nymphs. A thorough read of fishing regs is advised and don't forget to pinch down barbs on all hooks.
NORTHERN FOOTHILLS
AMERICAN RIVER--Very few reports available. River above Hwy 49 will close with the end of the trout season on Nov.16.BULLARDS BAR--Emerald Cove will be starting off-season hours on Nov.2. Office/marina will be open 10 to 4 all week but closed on Wed. The lake is low but there is good launching at Cottage Cove ramp. Dark Day ramp is on dirt and 4-wheel drive is recommended. The fishing overall has been slow.CAMP FAR WEST--The old dirt ramp is now in the water and useable for launching small aluminum boats with 4-wheel drive. There are lots of fish being caught, especially bass, on worms and jigs. Some stripers are starting to show, with a big one reportedly caught last week but not shown to the resort staff.COLLINS LAKE--Lake level is down but launching is no problem on a concrete ramp. Lots of big catfish are being caught all over the lake by boaters and shore anglers alike. Recreation Area is preparing their trout rearing pens for a late Nov. delivery of rainbows from DFG. Larry Hemphill, bass guide, hit the lake recently and caught a lot of fish but "nothing to brag about".ENGLEBRIGHT RESERVOIR--Lake level is still high with good launching. Lots of boat and shore angler activity but few are reporting in with their catch. The store is selling lots of nightcrawlers.FRENCH MEADOWS RESERVOIR--4-wheel drive launching off the bank. Trout action is pretty good for both trollers and bank anglers. Storm coming in this weekend has little snow forecast.HELL HOLE RESERVOIR--Lake level is low and launching is 4-wheel drive only for small aluminum boats. Trout action has been pretty good, but kokanee are schooling up for the spawn and the bite has been slow. No word on any Macks.LAKE OROVILLE--4-wheel drive launching only at Bidwell Canyon. Bass, catfish and coho are all biting. Bassers are doing well on fish to 4 pounds on drop-shot Roboworms at 35 to 40 feet to get below the smaller fish. Catfish are hitting anchovies in the Middle Fork. Coho are providing limit action at the south end of the Hwy. 162 bridge drifting minnows at 15 to 20 feet.ROLLINS LAKE--Launch ramp is back in the water at Long Ravine again and able to handle all size boats. Fishing reports have been scarce.SCOTT'S FLAT LAKE--The lake is low but there is no problem launching. Trout trollers are doing well in the middle of the lake over the river channel. Bass action is starting to pick up for anglers throwing worms and jigs.SUGAR PINE RESERVOIR--Ranger station rates the fishing as slow.STUMPY MEADOWS RESERVOIR--Planted this week by the DFG with rainbow trout. Trollers and shore anglers should see marked improvement with this plant, the first in some time.THERMOLITO AFTERBAY--Action on big steelhead is picking up rapidly. Lots of steelies to 6 pounds are hitting live minnows under a bobber. One shore angler caught a 6-pound steelie on a Senko. Bass anglers are doing well on a variety of artificial baits as well as live minnows for fish to 3 1/2 pounds.
NORTHEASTERN AREA
LAKE ALMANOR--A few anglers found trout on the east side by the Dorado Inn, where a mix of browns and rainbows went to 4 pounds. The dam area held a recent plant of small Eagle Lake fish, stealing worms. A better choice here has been bass which are suspended in 12 feet. Nose-hooking small, baby nightcrawlers had bass hitting on the way down.ANTELOPE LAKE--Roger's Guide Service anglers are still managing to catch and release 60 to 70 trout a day here. Hot red woolly buggers trolled to the right or left of the ramp has been great. Around the dam is a good area to start if you're shore fishing. What makes the dam area good are the steep drop-offs. Fish were averaging from 12 to 21 inches It's a very pretty drive here, with wonderful wildlife, excellent fishing, and little or no fishing pressure.BAUM LAKE--According to Vaughn's Sporting Goods in Burney, BWO's and Mahogany duns did well for dries, while copper Johns in green, Don's bug, and midges, are doing well for nymph fishermen. Lure anglers did well on just about anything. Bait fishermen are still doing best on nightcrawlers or Power Bait.CASSEL FOREBAY-- BWO's, Mahogany duns and callibaetis seem to be doing the trick for dries, while copper Johns in green, Don's bug, and midges are doing well for nymph fishermen. Bait fishermen are using nightcrawlers and salmon eggs. Lure fishermen are doing best on Rooster Tails and Panther Martins.EAGLE LAKE-- Anglers can expect to find steady action and a solid bite at Eagle Lake for trout from here on out, until the lake freezes as fish are now into a steady pattern of feeding up for the winter. Fish are averaging 3 pounds now, with a least one 5-plus-pound kicker coming to the docks each day. The fish are in the shallows now and biting all day long now as fish are feeding on snails and minnows in there.FALL RIVER-- Fishing well, with reports showing any dry or wet fly in olive is a best bet.PIT RIVER-- There are some sporadic caddis hatches up and down the river during the afternoons. Black AP's, golden stones, and rubber-leg princes are all doing very well.LAKE SHASTA--Trout are on the top now and easy to spot. Just look for boils or birds. Anything in a shad pattern is working for these hungry feeding fish. The clear skies we have been having have been seeing are sending bass deep, to the bottom, during the day but the early mornings and evenings has been good for topwater and spinnerbaits.- Western Outdoor Newswww.wonews.com
