I have narrowed my dog breeds down to either the German WH or WH Griffon. I want my furry companion with me chasing grouse in the mountains of MT and to be water friendly for the occasional duck, yet still be socialable around humans.

Any info about either breed would be appreciated. The biggest difference I can tell from my research is size and the Griffon can have a mean streak. Actual experience with the breeds is what I seek. Thanks.

I own a German Wirehair female. She is 3 yrs. old and is on the small side at about 50 lbs. "Rona" is the sweetest dog I have ever owned. She has never had a mean streak and is a very gentle and was easy to train. I interacted with both her parents and they exhibited the same calm behavior. Rona enters the water readily and will retrieve anything from the water. Around the house, she does not even bark at the door and when in her kennel no barking.

I will probably never have another breed other than a wirehair. The dogs I have had to compare her to were a Vizsla and a German shorthair. Of course my opinion is just that, my opinion. I cannot say that there are no other breeds that have the same qualities as my pup, but who can say no to that beard...

I have also had the opportunity to train with the number 5 ranked akc show Griffon in the nation. "Bernie" is a great hunter and is also very gentle, but he is on the large side. He is a good hunter and just received a prize II in NAVHDA Utility testing.

Take a look at the North American Versital Hunting Dog Association site for more info on these breeds.. www.navhda.org

Thanks for the information. I've talked to another German Wirehair owner who had similar reviews. He claimed it was the best dog he has ever had. That is the direction I am leaning.

I have a Griff he is with out a doubt the best dog I have ever had. I have been around alot of Griffs and have never met one with any type of mean streak. they are loyal and love to hunt. Pheasant Grouse Ducks Geese you name it they hunt it.

Spend time with both breeds and make your choice.
