Giant pacu: Damon Green had a biologist check that 8-pound, 4-ounce pacu his son, Jordan, caught last week at Chollas Lake. Green said the biologist told him it definitely was a pacu, and it had adapted well to its surroundings at Chollas. Jordan baited a chunk of mackerel that the pacu gobbled up.

City lakes fisheries biologist Larry Bottroff said he once saw a 101/2-pound pacu during one of his electrofishing surveys. The International Game and Fish Association's all-tackle mark for pacu is a 44-pounder caught in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., in 2000. The National Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame's mark is an 11-11 caught in DeKalb Lake in Alabama in 1998.
