GLEN HELEN FUNDRAISER FISHING DERBY -- matthews-ons -- 02sep10

Fun fishing derby to help magnet school keep environmental program

By JIM MATTHEWS - Outdoor News Service

A catfish fishing derby will be held at Glen Helen Regional Park in San Bernardino Saturday, Sept. 11 with two simple goals: to promote family fishing and to help one of the Inland Empire’s best elementary schools continue its proven education programs.

Kimbark Elementary School in Devore is the only school in the Inland Empire to have a dedicated outdoor science and technology curriculum. Kimbark is a science magnet school, and it has become one of the highest performing elementary schools in the district because of its innovative programs.

Kimbark has proven that our natural environment and the outdoors are among the best tools teachers can use to inspire children, and they can be used as a bridge for making reading, writing, math, and other areas of education more applicable, interesting, and fun. The test scores don’t lie.

Just as the education program is innovative, Kimbark’s staff and volunteers have decided to go a different route for fundraising to help pay for the special outdoor education trips the students in each grade take annually. With budget cuts, a third of the school’s funding to send kids to Catalina Island and the San Bernardino Mountains (and other places) has been slashed. But instead of selling candy or magazine subscriptions to close the gap, Kimbark is having a fun fishing derby that dovetails into their education program. Principal Karen Hoag also said it was also way to help tie the school with the larger community and promote a family activity.

The event will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11. If you have your own fishing tackle, cost is $10 per child 16 and under and $15 for adults and kids over 16. If you need fishing gear, Cost is $20 for kids and $25 for adults, and a rod and reel combo you can keep is included. For adults without fishing licenses, the cost of the one-day license is included in the entry fee. Non-anglers are $5 each.

You can register on-line before Sept. 7 at www.kimbarkfishing.org, or you can pay at the gate the day of the event.
