I am trying to figure out if there are pig in an area. They were there once, but have moved out, but perhaps not too far.
I would like to set up a camera trap and bait it with something they will hopefully smell from a distance, and then come get a free meal.

I figure if they are close enough to smell it, then I can do the next step which is to figure out where they are coming from.

So, anyone have an idea of what pigs would find irresistible, can be smelled from a distance, but hopefully will last a while before going rotten, giving them time to find it?

I put out dried corn, but unless they are already going to that spot, I doubt they would find it. Need something with some smell. Canned corn? Mushrooms?

Buy some Barley from a feed store and pu tit in a 55 gal barrel and add water let it sit(it will start to Smell) for a few days and It will bring them in. We use to feed it(mash) to the pigs all the time.

Ah yes, I found it. DFW 251.3, no person shall knowingly feed any big game mammals.
Looks like this plan wont work.
Thanks Wild1

I called DFG....the person who answered the phone was not sure in this case.
They forwarded me on to a warden who will call me back and let me know how to proceed.
Thanks all for your feedback.

How about...

Step 1: Start a legitimate barley farming operation.
Step 2: Put up trail cameras.

Does that count?

Seriously, it is illegal to feed big game animals. Period. make a search on Google "deer lady" for instance.
But there is nothing preventing you from accidentally dropping some barley from broken backpack in-front of your camera. You cannot see what happens with your backpack when it is on your back, Ha-Ha.
Just kidding. do not play with law. Does not worth it...

Put the attractant in a caged enclosure so it can bring the animals into camera range but cannot be consumed because of the caging.

Why does this keep coming up? Did people not pay attention in hunter safety class? This was under the ethics section. I guess everyone wants to take the easy way out? Don't do it! Stop watching Ted Nugent and watch Steven Rinella or Remi Warren instead.

Also cottonwood is right, growing barley or wheat as ag or habitat improvement is allowed.

We need a sticky for this.

Ca. Has a lot of catch 22's, isn't funny how it's considered an invasive species but yet it's there next big game animal that everyone desires to hunt, for the sake of ca. State revenue that's the bottom line, go figure and good luck, I would move out of town quick before the warden shows up and proceeded to arrest u instead of giving u advice, I see the making of a new wild justice episode....lol...tra

fun that some one talks about deer lady. I was going to say you are not suppose to feed them but the deer lady dose it and the DFG seems to turn a eye to it. So go ahead. Nothing to fear when law enforcement pick and choose what laws they feel like enforcing. lol

J/K don't break the law. The best sign of a good man or women is what you do when no one knows or is around. Any one can be good when they know they are being watched.

Use a scent attractant. Jello mix strawberry then combine with water and pour in front of camera on ground . All thats left is the scent of strawberries wafting in the breeze.

thank you for the Info. My point was that from what the older post said, the deer lady is still doing the same thing as always and no one seems to care. The LE have better things to do than go after her. I feel that they should bust each and everyone they can. No reason to pick when and how they will enforce the law.
