Well I got back last night from my pig trip up near Buellton with Central Coast Outfitters. It was a one day hunt for me and a buddy. Heres the story.

Friday night went to dinner at AJ Spurs in Buellton, great steak house. I grew up in the area so I knew they had great food. A steak and two beers later we were in bed (two seperate ones, I know what you guys were thinking) at the Motel 6 right at the 101 and the turn off for the road to the ranch. We took off at 0400 to meet the guides at 0500 at the ranch house near Jalama beach. It was right at a one hour drive (easy).

After the paper work we got in the truck and headed out for hogs. After about 20 minutes we found a group of 6 with a few piglets running around and also mixed in with some cows. We waited for about 40 minutes and then decided the pigs were not going to seperate from the cows for a good shot. After about another 20-30 minutes we found about 7 good boars and a couple trophy boars. We were both after meat, and this was our first pig hunt. We passed on the boars hoping to find a nice sow without babies.

Its now noon and time to head back to the ranch house for some deer sausage and ham sandwiches that the guides made up. Man that deer sausage was great. At about 1500hrs we loaded back into the truck and on our way to find some meat. My buddy and I were both getting a little nervous after paying $450.00 and not yet getting our pigs. At 1600 after a 3/4 mile stalk my buddy pulls the trigger on a 150lb sow. She dropped like a ton and the guide quickly gutted it and we were on our way to find me a pig.

About 100 yards from this one we find 2 boars about 200 pounds. An easy shot at about 75 yards. I ask the guide if he thinks we'll see anymore pigs. He said he was confident we would see more but could not say I would have a shot or not. It was my choice to shoot one of these boars or take the chance and find another sow. I passed and at 1720 I pulled the trigger from 225 yards and spinned a 175lb sow. It dropped and after about 10 seconds lifted up on her front legs and began squeling like crazy. She was facing right at me a I placed a 165 grain 30-06 right into her mouth. No more squeling.

We got both pigs back to the ranch, the guides skinned them and placed them into meat bags. We bull-shi$$ed for awhile and headed to NIpomo for the night and stayed with my parents.

The hunt was great. We also saw over 100 deer, 3 bobcats, several coyotes, about 200 quail, and all this while overlooking the great Pacific Ocean. Oh yeah also several whale spouts. This ranch is right on the shore and is 25000 acres. I recommend these guys to anyone. Several work buddies have hunted with them with the same results. The guides names are Alfred Lewis and Jason (dont know his last name). Can't wait till next year.

Sorry for such along story but didn't want to leave out any good parts.

Deadducks..

Great story, and congrats on the success! It sounds like an awesome hunt, seeing so many hogs. But, I had to keep going back over this part...

So, what did you think we were thinking? I'm sure I don't understand.

Great report!

To think I lived in Santa Barbara for 5 years, and didn't hunt at all! I've eaten at AJ Spurs many times though. It's a good experience, and is great food.

Great story, way to go!

My wife & I ate at AJ Spur's a couple weeks ago. I could hardly move when I waddled out of that place. Way too much food and all good eatin'. I don't know how you managed to hunt the next day.

Regards,
Paul

Very nice!

If I'd a known about Central Coast, being close to me and all, I'd a gone with them instead of Mustang Guide Service, especially after my experience.

I can tell you why at least one person doesn't stop at Jockos anymore.......it just isn't what it used to be in recent years. Went to Nipomo this past spring and we just weren't at all impressed with the food at all. The street vendors in Santa Maria seem to have much better fare and a reasonable cost. We used to stop in Nipomo's every year for about 10 years on the way up to an annual private lands deer hunt in Templeton.

Anyway, Jocko's is about 40 clips North of Buellton, isn't it? 10 years ago worth the drive, but now, I dunno........

Freedivr, next time you are in the Santa Maria Valley area, try the Hitching Post in Casmalia. not to be confused with the Hitching Post in Buellton. Same family but different business and ambiance. About 10 miles South West of Santa Maria. A bit out of the way, but worth it. They do not serve beans with their meals, but you do get a shrimp cocktail for an appetizer. IMO, the best aged meat in the area. Really good grub. Reservations on a Fri or Sat night are a must.

I grew up in Nipomo, with Joey Knotts, one of the sons of Jockos owners. Also know Danny and a few of the others. I haven't eating there in about 1 year but used to go often and get the Jocko burger. Man if you can eat the whole thing you can put some food away. The steaks are OK but AJ Spurs or Alex's in Shell Beach are better in my opinoin. For breakfast the are good, but so is McClintoks in the Village of AG or SLO. Also Scrambles in Pismo is good. If you get down into Guadalupe try Farwestern for Breakfast or Dinner also tasty.

I agree with the post that many of the parking lot baseball or football Bar-B-Q's are even better than the resteraunts. Playing baseball on the central coast we always had BBQ's for fund raiser. Its also a good way to help out the local sports programs.

I'm going back up there next week to pick up my pig. Can't wait. I will probably take my dad out to Lopez for a little fishing.

next time you are in the Santa Maria Valley area, try the Hitching Post in Casmalia

The beef is locally raised...you can tell by the way it glows on the plate! (Casmalia has a toxic dump if your not local). Jes kidden, the food there is great as is the Far Western.

The only thing I ever order at Jocko's is the Fillet Mignon, and they do not sell them in the parking lots. Rather have some of your pork though deadducks
