Well I got back last night from my pig trip up near Buellton with Central Coast Outfitters. It was a one day hunt for me and a buddy. Heres the story.
Friday night went to dinner at AJ Spurs in Buellton, great steak house. I grew up in the area so I knew they had great food. A steak and two beers later we were in bed (two seperate ones, I know what you guys were thinking) at the Motel 6 right at the 101 and the turn off for the road to the ranch. We took off at 0400 to meet the guides at 0500 at the ranch house near Jalama beach. It was right at a one hour drive (easy).
After the paper work we got in the truck and headed out for hogs. After about 20 minutes we found a group of 6 with a few piglets running around and also mixed in with some cows. We waited for about 40 minutes and then decided the pigs were not going to seperate from the cows for a good shot. After about another 20-30 minutes we found about 7 good boars and a couple trophy boars. We were both after meat, and this was our first pig hunt. We passed on the boars hoping to find a nice sow without babies.
Its now noon and time to head back to the ranch house for some deer sausage and ham sandwiches that the guides made up. Man that deer sausage was great. At about 1500hrs we loaded back into the truck and on our way to find some meat. My buddy and I were both getting a little nervous after paying $450.00 and not yet getting our pigs. At 1600 after a 3/4 mile stalk my buddy pulls the trigger on a 150lb sow. She dropped like a ton and the guide quickly gutted it and we were on our way to find me a pig.
About 100 yards from this one we find 2 boars about 200 pounds. An easy shot at about 75 yards. I ask the guide if he thinks we'll see anymore pigs. He said he was confident we would see more but could not say I would have a shot or not. It was my choice to shoot one of these boars or take the chance and find another sow. I passed and at 1720 I pulled the trigger from 225 yards and spinned a 175lb sow. It dropped and after about 10 seconds lifted up on her front legs and began squeling like crazy. She was facing right at me a I placed a 165 grain 30-06 right into her mouth. No more squeling.
We got both pigs back to the ranch, the guides skinned them and placed them into meat bags. We bull-shi$$ed for awhile and headed to NIpomo for the night and stayed with my parents.
The hunt was great. We also saw over 100 deer, 3 bobcats, several coyotes, about 200 quail, and all this while overlooking the great Pacific Ocean. Oh yeah also several whale spouts. This ranch is right on the shore and is 25000 acres. I recommend these guys to anyone. Several work buddies have hunted with them with the same results. The guides names are Alfred Lewis and Jason (dont know his last name). Can't wait till next year.
Sorry for such along story but didn't want to leave out any good parts.
