well gents,i,ll post the pics first while i write my novel,and oh yes, there will be more COPPER BASHING so stay tuned
for that rant!! he's a dandy....
for those that are not familar with my background,i have been a licensed guide here in california for 9 years, i have been
fortunate enough to have guided and hunted on some very primo ranches and still do, my kids and family have taken
presidence over the guide buisness the last few years,some may know where im coming from,chopper? i still
take my fair share of hunters out, but not as much as i use to,{for those wondering, this is by no way a shout out for
clients, i have many repeaters through out the year}
this is just my take and my personal experiences with
copper bullets since july of this year, since we have been mandated to shoot the stuff,i have personally witnessed
many,many,many, wounded animals and pass thrus that resulted in lost game and hard to recover game, game
requiring multiple shots for humane kills and so on and so on, now it is my duty to make sure that my guys
take only ethical shots , so believe me when i tell you that the hogs we are shooting,are being center punched
thru the shoulders or write behind in the crease 95% of the time, there is no need to take a crappy shot period on any animal!!
now for those that are copper lovers, keep in mind,this is what im experiencing on a weekly basis,you may think they are the best thing since chocalate, but keep in mind ,there is always a down side to any bullet and ive shot them all,i think
the barnes bullet {personally] is a piece of crap, pencil hole going in and pencil hole coming out,like shooting a hog
with a field tip.now, on with the story of the pig above!! i head out this a.m. for a all day adventure as i got the green light from mama!!
i get to my dojo at 6 a.m, ready to rock, hop on the quad and start my morning, get to my high point and start
to glass,immediatly i spot the trophy by himself{as usual} he is 300 yds out and heading back to the brush line for the daily
ciesta!! i plan my decent and know the cut of point {if i can make it}will bring him by me at 100yds, i opt for the close shot
as i really have no confidence in the barnes bullet
i start the brisk walk down the ravine, as i top out to were i thought he would be ,he is gone w.t.f.,just then above me i catch movement, the beast appears no more than 75yds
above me, he had beat me to the cut off, i deploy the bi-pod on the mdl.70 .270 win, and find him in the crosshairs, he is walking
fast to beat the sunrise, i give him my best coyote howl, and he freezes quartering away, i touch the trigger and bark one off!!
at the report of the rifle, he folds and rolls a few feet, as quickly as he hits the dirt .he is up and running again and makes it to the brush
no chance for afollow up,im pissed,again!!i hear him stop in the brush and hear only the menancing sound off loud breathing and gurgling, i give him a concervitive 15 to 20 minutes to expire, he does not and ive had it at this point!! i go in cocked locked and ready to rock doc!! as i approach thru the heavy chapparel!! my favorite thing to do
he bolts like a cock pheasant down hill, i look ahead and see that if he follows the same trail,he will come out about 50 yds ahead, i train on that area and out he comes full of piss and vinegar like he is not even hit!! i pump another round into him
and he buckles knees first and takes ahead dive ,i say wow!! that was exciting!!
i aproach from uphill{always uphill boys}
to see him turn his head at me and stand pissed
as he is chomping his cutters l{like they do when there pissed}
i shoulder old faithful,and give him #3 right behind the ear, thank the lord its over
after examining my shots,
the first one had pierced his lungs and left only a pencil size whole thru them,exciting the oposite shoulder,my 2nd shot
was 2 inches in front of the first one passing in front of the lungs with no visable trauma to any vessels,again,as though
i am shooting a field tip at the guy
3rd shot, snaps his neck and the trophy is down for good
as there will always be some good storys and people who praise the copper bullet,there will always be horror stories also,
and people who hate them, lets not have a pee-pee contest here, lets just hear some good hard core facts,good or bad,
and hopefully people will become more educated on the types of bullets they are shooting!! if they were not mandated in the sector i hunt, i would definetly not shoot them,nor would anybody i hunted, thanks for ears guys,and i hope you enjoyed
the story
Well, I wouldn't argue too much if you said he had 4 inches so he's definately a damn good boar hog. I totally agree with you on the copper bullet performance. I've had the same experience. Sounds like he was a tough S.O.B. too. The only thing that could have been better with your experience, would be watching 4 or 5 gritty ass hog dogs hooking it up with him instead of whacking him from afar...but that's a biased opinion of course. Nice one.
hi-tech ,this dude hails from s.l.o. county, bayed, i too love the dogs bro, its a hell
of a rush, and the recovery is a hell of alot better !! especially since the lead ban
