If you can't afford it, sorry to hear that. If you can afford it but choose not to partake, then more power to ya. If it's not worth it to you, don't do it. If you don't like the business's practices, don't patronize it.
Are guided hunt prices too high? Subjectively, they are too high for some people, but they aren't for others.
From a purely objective point of view, I'd say they're not too high because business appears to be booming and the industry is still growing.

I want to clarify one thing!
I never said I couldn't afford a $500 pig hunt, I'm not that broke thanks God!
What I'd say was that a pig is not worth $500 for me and it's overpriced for what it is.
I hope you guys get it now?

By your posts, it seems that the value of the hunt is based upon killing. If I was subsistance hunting, I would heartily agree with you. I myself do not need to subsistance hunt. I gain great pleasure from the hunt itself. If I got a pig on the first day and did not want to sit around camp, I would try to see if any hunter wanted assistance. An extra pair of eyes can be invaluable.
I have had many a hunt where I did not take an animal. I have also come home empty handed because I chose not to take a low percentage shot. In both cases I had a great time. Some of my most enjoyable hunting experiences has come from rubbing elbows with other hunters.
It's not only about the kill.

My honest feeling is that I feel its to expensive for what it is, I respect land owners and acknowledge that their chosen line of work is lined with things out of their control, no rain, to much rain, no sun, mad cow…you name it.
So if they see hunting pig as an added source of income all power to them. (its not that its to rich for my wallet, I just don’t think its worth THAT much) my problem is that I like to get out often and I like hunting for what it is…hunting.

"San franphysco " -- is that in Northern California, or is Norcal there??? I am sure Norcal has been to at least one place with that kinda name!! 7 mag, just kidding, Norcal refers to a JHO thread started by a guy going by the name of Norcalihunter. It was absolutely the funnniest and longest thread in 2007. Look it up because it looks like you are quickly becoming the early 2008 sequel.

Tejon is a fenced ranch. It is very large, but they do keep a fence maintained to keep their game from wandering off. I used to hunt a field that butted up against it. The rancher didn't like the pigs coming into his orchard in the evenings. Tejon found out we were killing their pigs and came and fixed the fence and put up a better one. Also, Tehachapi and Piute mountains butt up against Tejon, not just the freeway and desert. I wouldn't mind hunting there again as I've done so in the past. I certainly wouldn't pay just to visit and camp there since there are many free places just as nice.
As far as them being greedy, they're in it to make money, not to manage game. That's why a couple of years ago they brought in more pigs. Their stock was getting low. For a couple of years we weren't getting any pigs from there in our shop; now we're getting them again. Also, I don't think their elk can go in the record books. I might be completely wrong about that, but I think they even have their own season apart from elk season where the shooter can come on whenever he wants even out of the regular season and shoot it. Like I said though, I might be wrong about that, but I think one of the elk we got from them once in our taxidermy shop was out of season and we had to check to make sure it was okay. I'm not trying to put Tejon down; like I said, I've hunted there before and probably will again some day.

I know, totally off-topic, but I think the topic has been done for a while... if not, I apologize.
I'm doing the best I can to draw off the memory banks, but I can't recall seeing a fence anywhere on the North or South side big or strong enough to keep in elk, deer, or hogs. I do know that at least one of the in-holdings is protected by a pretty serious fence, but that's about it. As for the ranch themselves, they state publicly that there are no high fences and populations are self-sustaining.
I wonder where you heard that they "brought in more pigs" a couple of years ago... it's possible, but doubtful. The place has been crawling with pigs since I first started hunting it six years ago, and releasing pigs on the property would be illegal, since it is not high fenced. I would think the Tejon management would know better than to take that kind of chance, since that kind of thing would not only get them in dutch with the DFG, but would also have the environmental groups screaming louder than they already are.

speckter, this may be of topic also,but you and the other folk that hunt there no that the elk , antelope and hogs were
put there right? they have no reason to leave, they have there own little paradise that is intensly managed.
therfore, back to many earlier posts by several other people, they can charge whatever the heck they want
too, and will have people that will continuley pay there fee,s whatever the price maybe.off topic once
again,i believe the only original big game species would be the deer and bear.once again,god

Yeah, I'm definitely aware that the elk were introduced by Tejon. The hogs, as the story has it, were sort of a surprise from another ranch...but once there, they've gone crazy. I was never sure if the antelope were native or not... but elk and antelope were once present in the area. I agree though, that with the premium habitat on that ranch, there's just not much reason for the game to go far. The hogs are spreading across I-5 to the west, and over toward Bakersfield in the North.
