Alot of people dont like to do it, but it might be the time to start carpooling. If you get 2-4 guys plitting the cost of fuel it alot better than one. For me and my friends normally everyone drives themselfs. We all have our own dogs, gear ect... and it becomes a hassel to pull it out and put it into someone else rig. Hassel or not its time to ride share for me, at least on the out of area hunts, that are 2-3 hours, or more out.
I have a 2002 Ford F350 Dual Cab 4x4 thats been sitting for the last two months. I will only drive it to hall the horse trailer, or the 5th wheel, or if I need to go load up on hay, and dog food. All that said I went out and bought a used Jeep, and a tent. I'm getting a basket made for the hitch on the jeep so I can load up two dog boxes on it. I know Jeeps dont get the best MPG either but 20mpg (thats what I've been averaging) is better that the 15, and gas verses diesel fuel, at almost a $1 is a good savings. For me I live in the desert which is closer to my hunting spots, but limits me to the vehicles I drive because we live on a 2 mile long dirt road, so I have to have 4x4's.
My wife already knows that I'll stop going out to dinner, and or doing the extra things like movies, and other entertainment before I will stop hunting. For me being outdoors is who I am, hunting is my lifestyle and makes me who I am, so I might have to start cutting back on the little things and the extras, and start to ride share now, but I wont stop hunting, and you'll never see me get rid of my dogs either.
