Alot of people dont like to do it, but it might be the time to start carpooling. If you get 2-4 guys plitting the cost of fuel it alot better than one. For me and my friends normally everyone drives themselfs. We all have our own dogs, gear ect... and it becomes a hassel to pull it out and put it into someone else rig. Hassel or not its time to ride share for me, at least on the out of area hunts, that are 2-3 hours, or more out.

I have a 2002 Ford F350 Dual Cab 4x4 thats been sitting for the last two months. I will only drive it to hall the horse trailer, or the 5th wheel, or if I need to go load up on hay, and dog food. All that said I went out and bought a used Jeep, and a tent. I'm getting a basket made for the hitch on the jeep so I can load up two dog boxes on it. I know Jeeps dont get the best MPG either but 20mpg (thats what I've been averaging) is better that the 15, and gas verses diesel fuel, at almost a $1 is a good savings. For me I live in the desert which is closer to my hunting spots, but limits me to the vehicles I drive because we live on a 2 mile long dirt road, so I have to have 4x4's.

My wife already knows that I'll stop going out to dinner, and or doing the extra things like movies, and other entertainment before I will stop hunting. For me being outdoors is who I am, hunting is my lifestyle and makes me who I am, so I might have to start cutting back on the little things and the extras, and start to ride share now, but I wont stop hunting, and you'll never see me get rid of my dogs either.

Wow...

It's getting bad. Over $5/gallon now for diesel, even at most truck stops!

I just dropped over $300 just in fuel to hunt Tejon this weekend, and that's with the big truck sitting idle in camp while I drove around in Petunia (Samurai). Obviously won't be able to do that on a very regular basis!

I spent $120 in gas to hunt Tejon. The tag was $450. Gas added 21% to the price of my hunt. For Phil, gas added 40% the price of his hunt... without food and other expenses of course.

I'm supposed to hunt Elk in Colorado this year. Gas will cost me the same amount as my out of state Bull tag... or $200 more than the Cow tag!!!

Time to get an Enduro and airfreight the meat home...

Hey Oz... remind me not to hire you when I need an accountant.

$450 for the hunt
$300 for the fuel... let's see...

300/450 = 67%

Gas prices have killed my spontaneous acts of going out for the day or weekend so now it's planned and so far the planning has not happened......now I sit in the back yard with the pellet gun and try to get a quick fix..........................

yup not looking much better I just paid 4.25 for regular. That means 130 dollers back and forth to my B Zone and 30.00 for each hog run depending on time spent on the ranch and amount of hill climbing/dead idle cause I forgot to shut it off. Top that with Copper Ammo cost coming.......I know of allot of lucky hogs this year. B Zone deer and bear get a free pass on my spot too.

It's definitely gonna put the hurt on my deer hunting trips this year, although if this year goes like last, I won't need but two trips anyway.

Oh, I remember your last year:) I enjoyed reading all about those two trips. Let me know if you need someone to pay for gas when you go back to that spot.

I used to go out twice or so during the week and once on the weekend, but my dogs and I haven't been out for hogs in about a month. Needless to say, we are all getting antsy.

I am thinking of taking the two wheel drive truck hunting and doing alot more walking. I've got a little bitty antique Appleby camping trailer. The toyota gets about 24 mpg whereas the ford gets 12.orso on the road. It looks like I may have found some deer hunting that's a little closer, but pigs are still at least 100 miles away. Maybe invest in a skid plate for the radiator
