S. EL MONTE—A new series of Hunter Education classes has been established at Triple B Clays, good news for would-be hunters wishing to obtain their first hunting license prior to the start of fall.
Sign-ups are underway for the first one-day class, scheduled for Sunday, May 22. Additional one-day classes are slated for June 18, July 23, and Aug. 27, with additional classes and multi-day courses likely.
Cost for the course is $28 and in return students receive a $20 voucher for use anywhere at the range, which features trap, skeet, sporting clays, a pro-shop and deli. The remainder is used to cover expenses for the volunteer instructors.
Los Angeles County Fish & Game Commission Chairman and Hunter Education Instructor John Hybarger is coordinating courses at Triple Bs. Class size is limited, and advance payment of the $28 fee is required to reserve a seat.

“Located near the intersection of the 605 and 60 freeways, next to Whittier Narrows County Park, the location is ideal because it’s freeway-close and it has everything for both students and instructors,” said the Department of Fish and Game’s Lt. Mike Norris, who coordinates Hunter Education efforts in Southern California.
All would-be hunters are required have a minimum of 10 hrs. of Hunter Education training, and score at least 80 percent on a 100-question final exam. There is no minimum age to enroll in Hunter Education courses, however students may be excluded from the test if the instructor determines they lack the maturity to safely handle firearms and follow DFG regulations.
Additional Hunter Education courses are available throughout Southern California and are listed by county on the DFG’s website, www.dfg.ca.gov/huntered/classes.
