I am giving up,im surounded by national forest and conservation land, but it is very very iffy on killing a nice buck,i have been scouring the country side looking for private land to hunt with very little luck,i do have some to hunt but access is difficult at best.(I just want to harvest at least 1 wall hanger before i die)
So after this season is over im going to breakdown and try to lease some hunting land, this goes agianst every grain in my body but I have to sadly admit that this is the direction everything is headed for everyone. otherwise you are stuck with yearling bucks that the MDC has no interest in letting grow up,all the MDC wants to do is cash out on tag sales every year and claim that its all in the name of herd control,if they was really interested in controlling the deer herd in Missouri they would go after doe's,letting the small bucks get some age on them dont cause the deer population to get out of control at all,After all bucks dont have fawns.Missouri is surrounded by QDM states but sits idly on its hands and dont do nothing.

OK im done ranting and raving, tommarrow is a new day and maybe things will look better then.

I tell everyone I know that I hunt. I have picked up 4 spots totalling about 1100 acres that are almost all mine to hunt. Its all mine for bow season, but I only have one spot for gun. Plus I can hunt everything else that I want on all of it.

Most of the land is from friends telling me that their folks own this land or that and then getting permission as a friend of their sons or what not. 2 of them really like me watching out for their cabins during the fall and winter, as they don't travel to their cabins except nice spring and fall days.

Leasing aint all that bad I don't suppose, at least you have the rights to be there! Sometimes I feel like I am on a slipery slope as I am on the property as a guest only, although I do what I can to help out.

My best advice is to keep knocking on doors, and following up with people who say they let other people hunt, as you never know when those other people might do something to upset a land owner, and you can maybe make a good impression (its an opportunity!!). Also, when you go asking for permission take photocopies of your driver's lic. with your phone number and other info that might make them feel more comfortable. If you hand over that kind of information to them, they may take you more seriously!

Anyway, best of luck, don't get down! I am in sales (industrial) and make over 300 phone calls a week. 60% of those calls I don't even get thru to who I was looking to talk to, and a lot of those people tell me "no". I make up for it with the law of averages, at some point someone is going to tell me yes. The more people I talk to, the sooner I can get to a "yes". Its sales, and thats what you are doing when you are trying to get land to hunt, selling yourself!

Passthu,
If I understand your post correctly...looks like you found a generous landowner and get on the property without having to lease it. Thats GREAT! I have permission to hunt private land also, but I think I will hunt some public land too. Theres another chunk of private land I have permission to hunt down in the Lowry City area. Any good deer & turkey populations down that way? The person who gave me permisssion to hunt down that way, said "you'll be passing up alot of deer and turkey on your way down here". Congrats on the find Passthru!

Congrats Passthru,

Since you tried (but failed) to collect any ticks or chiggers during our walk-around at one of my huntin' places, I guess I could volunteer to do the same for you and walk around your 500 acres you just got, only I can almost guarantee I'll do better than you did, as far as collecting pests ! ! !

Just kiddin' but congrats on your find.

Here in Canada it is hard but i have learned that if you can prove to the landowner
that you are a responsible hunter, and will repect his fences, cattle, etc he will let you on. If you do get on it is always a nice gesture to offer him some of the meat as a token of appeciation

I'm glad that you found a great place to hunt on Passthru. Remember to show your appreciation year round to the landowner. Show that you appreiciate by sending a card on Christmas, maybe a fruit basket now and then and stop by during the dog days of summer to just say hello.

One family from a parcel that I hunt on, send me invitations to family events all the time. They kind of took me in as one of their own.

Have fun!
