Hi all. I am new to this group. I live in South Dakota and am addicted to elk hunting. I don't like to be guided, as I like to do my own thing while hunting. I usually hunt Colorado and we guide/pack our horses and have a great elk hunt. I wanted to try a new area and have an "Idaho Middle Fork B' tag which is a rifle hunt during the rut in units 20a, 26, or 27 between Challis / Salmon and McCall. The first year in a new area like this, I don't want to bring our horses.

I would like to know any information on how to hunt this area and what unit would give us our best success. We are right now planning on flying into the wilderness. Is this the best way?

Has anyone taken a jet boat up the Salmon River into the wilderness?

Any information or insight would greatly be appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I haven't hunted that unit, but have hunted in units close to yours. Don't know anyone that has flown or jet boated in the area. But, I can tell you the area is STEEEEP terrain. Good luck.

I hunted deer south of Yellow Pine in unit 27 in 2000. It's steep as hell in some areas. I met a fellow in Yellow Pine who'd just shot a spike bull that morning within a mile of the airstrip that's on the map just north of yellow pine a ways...Most folks use horses in that country for elk and I sure know why. He was on his way in about 5 miles where he normally got into elk and just lucked into a small band of elk.

You actually will see more rigs with horse trailers there than without trailers along the road into Yellow pine...I don't recommend it unless you're in tip/top shape. Quads are worthless there.
