Hey guys,

I'm a recent resident of San Diego and am going to take a shot (pun intended) at dove hunting in Imperial County. I've only hunted dove in northern california so this will be new territory for me. I did a quick scout a week ago and have a few questions:

I have a map of the fields from last year and drove by a few and noticed that there did not seem to be much planted as far as food is concerned. Was I missing something? Is there a more accurate map depicting what fields were planted? I know the drought probably limited some crop planting but any information would be appreciated. Not looking for spots just overall outlook.

I will be doing this hunt alone so if anyone has any advice on safer areas to hunt that would also be appreciated...or if you need a partner to tag along haha. I would perfer to not be shoulder to shoulder with strangers with guns but I know how dove hunting works sometimes. Any PMs on areas that don't get as much heat would also be cool. Thanks guys, and good luck sept 1st.

p.s. Sorry if this was one of those annoying posts but just taking a shot in the dark. Not trying to be an internet scouter.

Good luck and it is time to get out there and scout scout scout although it may be a few weeks to early as things change rapidly.. Food sources change and with the lack of water there was limited growth..

GOOD LUCK and spend the last two weeks of the season scouting and let me know what you find ok?

Just my personal opinion but I think this forum is set up for questions like this. Carry on

Forums are not for giving away spots or places to go.. Internet scouting should not be allowed at all and guys need to get out there and do the work THEMSELVES rather then ask Gee I wanna go hunting not asking for your honey hole or not trying to be an inter net scout but if you ask then you are being one??

Let me add something:
If someone wants to place a post, first they need to seek approval of 7mallards in writing.
BTW. do not forget to double check your grammar, he does not like it.
Didn't you know that?

Naaaa, he was just kidding, wasnt he??? Or not?

All right... As far as the fields go, the upland hunting is terrible when compared to the seasons some 20 years ago. The bird numbers rely heavily on the farming and water. The condition of the fields may look bleak but some dove will fly in to rest and/or forage. You could set up on nearly any field and get "some" shooting in before frustration gets higher than the sun. So, it is a good thing to scout earlier. Also, take note of any cultivated fields or active orchards.

thanks marty. Didn't mean to start anything with the previous posts, I'm just used to hunting on a crop and going from there and when I scouted it did not look like that. I don't think I was asking for honey holes just an overall expectation of hunting out there. I'll head out there closer to the opener. Thanks guys.

Justguy aren't you the "know it all guy from the calguns forum that most people can't stand?? Just asking...

You are wrong, i'm just guy from THIS forum no one can stand, and you know why? when i see s...t, i say - s..t.
When i see ignorant bag of nothing, i say - 7mallards. Just answering...

BTW, have you had time to revisit Condor Zone regs about lead free ammo? Every one is already tired to read your unwarranted statements about it, maybe it is a good idea to stop embarrass yourself so much, have a mercy for yourself. Grow up a little.

One more advise: when you post, please run a spell check, it will let you criticize me for my poor grammar without embarrassing yourself.

PS, I know a "know it all" guy from this forum that most people can't stand, guess who might it be!

goza,
Sounds like a legit question to me. I can see from what you said that you have actually been in the valley scouting and had a look around. I hunt down there a fair bit. I'll send you a PM and answer your question. Can't do anything about the heat, I was down there Friday and it was Hot Hot Hot!!! Have a limit by 9:30 - 10:00 and either head home or find a pool.

WOW Just GUY I guess no one but you can have an opinion on a forum and if someone says something you go off and call them names etc... I guess it is ok for you but not for others to have an opinion and you can say whatever you like but no one else can is that correct?

As far as the other forum you are on there under different user names and you slam people all the time so don't pretend it is not you and act like your some kind of forum angel as you have just proven with your response above that your no Saint on the forums and if you don't like something you are free to lash out at others... Spell check and complete English sentences would be nice so if you can manage that please try to do so as it might make you look and sound somewhat intelligent.

Sarg I don't care where he hunts I just was saying once he scouts it out lets us all know so those interested can go there after all this is the new way of hunting right?? It was dry humor that went straight over your melon for sure...

You guys are getting all worked up over an opinion and if yo udon't like mine that is fine but I don't have to like yours either...

Relax and

Hey guys, the both of you have plenty to offer here. But frankly, the back and forth banter between the two of you is a poor distraction to the thread, in fac,t your jacking the thread and as such, not serving the OP's question. It's gotten old. We get it, you both have this little feud going, your both opinionated, but will you guys need to stop already. All you have to do is simply stop responding to each other, and concentrate on the OP's question.

Gozags, this is just my opinion, I have been hunting that area for a number of years and those fields were set up to provide a go to starting spot for people. They use to keep them set up a little different than now. Even had Pheasant plantings in them. Now they are just fallow fields that might attract birds or not. I've had some great second half of the season shooting there. There are usually better spots to be found that will offer better shooting. Now to my advice.....Scout! Look early and late. Look not only at the birds but how they fly in or out of the area. The closer to opener you look the more accurate your decisions will be. Did I say scout? I hope I'm answering your question correctly.

The above post is solid info and based on what has been going on over the last few years. Good to see some actually field based info being provided to forum members. Should be helpful to anyone shooting the opener down there.
