30 would be another good bow area if it's open.

I believed Rannie is no longer working at FHL.

That's the weekend after the SHOT Show, which may mean my weekend passes are limited. I may try to make part of the weekend though.

Sounds like a good way to make my first trip to FHL.

Speckmisser,
You live in the neighborhood and you've never been to FHL????? Well......it is about time.
For public land big game hunting, Camp Roberts and FHL are on the top of the list, unless you want to hunt in the Northeast corner and Northwest corners of California. Good luck and good hunting on your first timer. 'Nuff said.

I'm really gonna try and get there. It will be my first pig hunt, and I believe a great learning experience. I have a couple of ?? maybe someone can help me with:

First, is there a place to camp, like tent camping, on the FHL property?
Second, if my dad comes with me, he won't be hunting, does he need a weekend pass too?
Third, is this an archery only hunt or is rifle hunting included? I dont have a bow but I bought a rifle this year specifically for pigs.

Thanks for the invite and I'm really gonna try and make it. Hope to see you all there!!!!

Bux-n- dux,
FHL has a primitive campground(no running water, just a chemical latrine) next to the hunter's check in/registration station. FHL applications($25 per weekend pass or $70 annual pass) are sent by mail ONLY and takes up to 2 weeks to process and the fee is paid with a money order ONLY, no checks or cash. Each hunter is allowed to bring along a NON-hunting, NON-paying visitor, one visitor per hunter. Training Areas 29 and 30 are walk-in only and muzzleloader, shotgun-slugs and/or archery only. The rest of the training areas are drive-in, rifle, pistol(6" barrel or longer, .44Mag or bigger I believe????), shotgun-slugs, archery or muzzleloader as you choose. Do not bring a pistol if it is not conforming to their 6" barrel/caliber rule. Post 9/11 and you do not want to be in a military-federal reservation breaking their firearm rules. You can download the application form at their website
www.liggett.army.mil or you can access it here at JHO at the California hunting menu.
Speed limits are strictly observed. Vehicle registration and proof of car insurance are required. Ask at the registration window what Training Areas have recent harvests and do a search here at this JHO website for excellent previous info regarding recommended Training Areas at FHL. If it is raining, you will probably have a good chance at getting stuck in the grease like goop of FHL dirt roads. Other than that, it is a lovely place, well taken care of, contains game and relatively safe from gang-bangers drinking beer and doing target practice helter-skelter.'Nuff said.

I'm in. But I do have a couple of questions: 1. do we know for sure that FHL is open for hunting on the Presidents Day weekend, or do we still have to call the Wednesday before (it would help a lot for planning if I knew for sure)....? 2. I'd like to set up a tent Friday night, but I have to work on Friday and then I have a long drive (I live in southern CA.) so it'll be dark when I pull in. Is this a problem with either entrance to the base camping or setting up a tent....? If so, what are my options....? Thanks for any help - appreciate it.

They do plan on being open but it is a military base and any thing can happen at any time to change their plans.
