Lone Wolf,

I drove from North Orange County back in October. I left at 5:15pm and I stopped for gas and a bite to eat...I was at the front gate of CR by 10:20pm. On the return trip on Sunday evening, I made it home in 4-1/2 hours which included a stop for Arby's for dinner. Home is in the LA area. You should easily cut off 1/2 hour min, IMO. CR is about 15mins north of Paso Robles.

Technically, I believe the rule is that you can not leave a firearm unattended in a vehicle. The second weapon would technically need to be off base or in the care of the PM. I believe that is correct, please someone correct me if this is wrong.

I emailed Lowell kind of with the same question regarding leaving a firearm in the vehicle or back at camp when I was hunting with my bow in the archery only area. He said you can just leave it in the car. I plan on bringing 2 firearms and my bow. Being able to leave them in the car would eliminate having to go back and forth to get your guns if you wanted to switch from the archery only area to the firearms area. May need more clarification on this one.

Can a firearm be left in the vehicle unattended while your out hunting any area no matter if its archery only areas or the others?

To the best of my knowledge there's no reason you can't have your backup rifle or weapon in the vehicle while you're hunting. A lot of folks aren't staying on base with access to the PMO, so they'll have everything with them in the vehicle. Such a prohibitive rule would be a pain to enforce and wouldn't serve much purpose.

However, if you do leave a weapon in the vehicle, make sure you lock up. Even though it's a military base, it's still open to the public.

Ok as per CR hunting regulations........ There is nothing that say's that you can not have another weapon locked in your car. The only thing is no loaded weapons in a vehicle, and no 22 rimfire, and handguns for big game only. So per CR Reg., YES, you can have more than one weapon in your vehicle, while hunting with another.

That only applies to troops and civ that live and work here, what they mean is that they do not want troops with their own guns in their cars in case someone gets mad and goes postal in the main base areas. It does not apply to hunters in the field hunting. But if you stay on base you will have to store your guns at the PMO when you come back in from hunting.

Does anyone have an idea by now where you're staying? On base motel or at the tracks? I think with the unpredictibility and size of my group I'd be better off staying at the tracks. I'd hate to reserve spaces at the campground and nobody use them.(when it might fill up) If the weather turns bad we won't melt.(I won't at least) It'll give you a little ambition to get up and walk off the cold. I know gunner said he's going to be at the tracks too. Anyone else?

Just another thought. The PMO is not as bad as it seems. Once you check in the first time and fill out the form, it's pretty quick. They will know who you are when you walk in. You initial the sheet and you're off. That's the rules. No way around it. It wasn't a bad experience at all. They're just doing their jobs.

It looks like I will be at the tracks, I will make resv. at a hotel but only use them if it's going to be pooring rain. I will be getting there probably about 3:00pm on friday. Do you know if you can get any of the forms needed for check in on Friday or do you have to wait until Saturday. This is going to be one fun hunt, can't wait. What will most of you be hunting with? I'm taking my 300mag and will probably start out with that, but then go into area 6 or 7 with my bow or shotgun.

Thanks,

If you'll look back in this thread, maybe on the other on this hunt is a link to the gun registration form. Other than that I don't know. I know it's not liked(sorry boartracks) but grap an extra copy of the others on Saturday for sunday. I'm sure it makes their job a little easier too. I will have my rifle hoyt bow and 870. You never know where they'll be. We might have a good group at the tracks.

Lowell, I have a question from one in my group. Can you carry a pistol while you're rifle hunting? I've read the other posts but I'm still not clear on the rules. Thanks.

Ive seen fires at the tracks. I know it's against the CR rules to have an open fire on base. Is there going to be a problem with a fire at the tracks? With the fires down south I don't know if it'll be a problem or not.

Hey Rudog,
Let me see now, I'm at work, and you should be at work but you not. But now I see a post from you at 2:00am what gives? Just kidding, I know what's up. We may have to ask Joe to borrow his 5 gallon bucket with the toilet lid attachment just in case of an emergency.

Cda55, I think I seen a post a while back mentioning carying a sidearm when quail hunting just in case you ran into some hogs. They said it was ok as long as it was centerfire. I'm sure Boartracks will confirm this though.

Fritz,

The hilton is all booked up but feel free to stop and speak with some brothers that are going along too (Beam and Daniels). They are smooth talkers and can bring out the best, and worst in you... My son is excited, he was up at 5am searching for any hunting shows on the TV.
