Hey guys,

So, Barbara finally had a little time to follow up with me regarding the hunting schedules for next year. As has been mentioned, Tejon is taking over Don Smith's archery-only hunts, and will be booking them beginning in February (I think). I have no doubt I can find a dozen archers from JHO to book the archery area for a weekend.

My question to you guys is, first (I think this is a gimme)... how many of you would be interested in an archery-only hunt at Tejon? The cost looks to be around $400, plus insurance, and may include lodging and FOOD (still getting details on this part). If there's not much interest, I'm gonna suggest trying to get signed up for one of their regular archery hunts... but if it looks like we can fill the area, I'd like to do a JHO-only event.

Second question, especially those of you who've hunted the archery area before, how bad is it in the winter? Are the roads as treacherous? How about fog? If we booked in February, would most of us be road-bound? I've only hunted the South side, and as I repeat over and over, I have no desire to ever again try to hunt that zone in the foul weather. Too much chance of someone getting hurt or at least losing a vehicle.

Right now, and pending input from you hunters, I'm leaning toward doing this hunt back-to-back with the JHO POR in May, right after turkey season, but if the roads and conditions are good in winter, there's no reason not to do it earlier.

Here is my input, first of all I will do a archery only hunt anytime, have done two this year at Tejon.

Second, the roads are a little different than I saw in March on the South Side, ie there aren't any roads to the top, so basically you park on the flat stuff and walk up so weather conditions should not matter.

Also a team type event, total combined weight, was something different that Don's outfit did, kinda liked it.

One Track will have the best response, he knows Tejon one hundred times better than I.

Bearclaw,

I think that if we book a JHO-Only event, contests and such won't apply. Not to say we couldn't do our own, although personally...outside of a big pig pool, I'm not real big on "competitive" hunting. If the group wants to do something, then we can discuss and make it happen. However, we'd also need to consider legalities.

I'm down like James Brown goin' to town! Oh hell yeah!

If it's slick, I like the idea of the roads being down in the bottom of the canyons versus up on top of the ridges like we are used to with the South side. Might be a better option. I'm sure it still gets nasty, but at least you wouldn't be sliding off a cliff into a hell hole.

Speck,

The pig pool was the team event, wasn't "competitive", just since the success rate is probably 20% that spices it up a bit.

Also adds a little more campfire smack talking.

Also in my opinion the cooler the weather the better, that way pigs are moving more during the day, that will help more folks get a chance at the hogs, also since you hike up to glass below, the cooler the better, though I will hunt anytime.

I'm in if it's an early hunt. Pigs and heat don't mix, IMO. Unless of course, you are a bowhunting machine like One Track and Bearclaw!! From what I understand, the archery hunt is in Tejon Canyon and it's basically a hike up hunt. A good friend of mine, Art Cain, used to guide for Don. I will get good info from him and report back. I have one question Spec. Has this area been off limits to gun hunting since the archery hunts stopped? Ed F

The north side would be okay in the winter depending on how much rain or snow. Tejon Canyon on the north side is like Bear Trap canyon, one long canyon with ridges above it on both sides. I'd say the ridges are as high as Ghegus Ridge is on Bear Trap. Lots of the pigs I saw while driving thru the archery area were half way up the ridge, like they do on Ghegus.

Count me in please

I'm in on this one. I know some good spots up Tejon Canyon. The road is very driveable and the hikes away from the road are not too bad.

Bring it on.

Yah, Tejon Canyon would be no problem in the rain. There are roads to the top, but we never really hunted from them. Plenty of room for 20 people or so. I think the house/cabin sleeps at least 14 people. There were a few others camping around the house, under the oaks. Maybe I'm getting old, but that house was dang nice to return to. Good bed, hot shower, kitchen....no brainer.
