Just got back from Camp Five Outfitters, second time in six weeks I think I need a twelve step program for pig hunting. Anyway I got a two hundred pound pig and the other three guys in our party also tagged out. It was a great trip and the weather was excellent. One of our guys wounded a hog and went up a very steep mountain to retrieve it. We were all watching from the hill immediately across from the one the pig was on. Anyway what a show, the pig was in brush and we couldn't see it and either could the two guys looking for it. Suddenly we saw the pig moving up the hill slowly and we began directing the guys to it. They still couldn't see it but as they got closer one of them slipped and began to slide down this very steep hillside. Out of nowhere the pig came from down hill and began charging the guy who was scrambling like hell to get back up the hill. It looked funny but it wasn't since this pig was pissed. The pig lost its footing and slid down the hill before getting to the guy but the guys slipped again, went down the hill toward the pig and repeated the whole show one more time. Kind of reminded me of the scene from jaws where the captain was sliding into the shark's mouth. In the end the guys got to the pig and finished it but we had a great time at dinner telling and re-telling the story.

Camp five charges seven hundred but that includes varmint shooting after you tag out. The accomodations are also extra but the house is fantastic. This is my second time there and I will continue coming back, the guides are great and the location of the house is perfect. This is a first class operation and since I really like to shoot squirrels and coyotes I get a full day and half of that after the pig hunt.

Great photo. That hog sure looks bigger than 200 pounds. I've heard a lot of great things about Camp 5. A little pricey for the average Joe but I'm sure their success rate is pretty high. So you got to ask yourself, what is my time worth?

Great story! Sounds like plenty of excitement for your money.

I can't believe how expensive guided hog hunts are getting in this state. Not a knock on you, or Camp 5... just a sad observation.

No doubt things are getting expensive for sure. I am not independantly wealthy but my time is worth something and although I looked into other places that frankly were $100-200 less they couldn't offer me the varmint hunting that has really added to the whole experience for me. First time there my twelve year old boy and I tagged out three hours into our first afternoon that left all day Saturday and half of Sunday. We ended up getting a coyote and a bunch of ground squirrels not to mention having fun with a guide who taught my son and I a lot about pigs and ranching in general. I really like hunting alone (non-guided) in fact Camp Five is my first guided hunting trip, although I have fished with guides before, I find that although I hunt deer and elk in Montana every year unguided the pig thing is new to me and in two trips I have gotten a pretty good education. The hog in this picture was hit square in the heart but managed to run about 70 yards. I new where he was but we "tracked" the blood trail anyway and the guide pointed out some interesting things to remember when I am tracking one that I don't know is down. These things as well as the guide pointing out other interesting nature facts is what I am paying for in my mind. Like I always say you will never see an armored car following a hearse so might as well spend some it on the things I love, especially when my boy is involved.

Hey Aug, like I said... definitely not knocking you. Just bummed at how high a guided hog hunt is getting.

I used a guide for both my elk, and paid a lot more than $700. I'll probably use one when I go for caribou in a year or two as well. I also pay to hunt private land here in CA, and that's not getting any cheaper either. And like you, I'm definitely not independently wealthy.

The value of anything is what the individual is willing to pay. Sounds like you feel that you're getting your money's worth, and that's what counts.

Speck I took no offense at all to your reply. It's funny about the outdoor sports if it flips your switch then you pay the money. People see the money I spend on guns, flyfishing gear, trips to Canada for geese, club memberships, etc. and if they aren't into it they think I'm nuts. But we all have our little addictions I guess, like I tell my wife, don't complain it could be booze and 19 year old girls. She always says, "well at least that would be cheaper." Of course my response to that is, "not for me it would cost me half of everything we own."

Camp 5 is located North on 101 about 15 miles from Paso Robles. I want to be sure everyone knows I am just a customer I have no interest in Camp 5. Email me if you want more detail about my expeiences with this outfitter.

Hey Aug, feel free to post up as much as you like about your hunt. The advertising policy is pretty well defined, but it shouldn't discourage JHO members from sharing detailed info about guides and outfitters. This site should be a resource for our members who are looking for exactly this kind of information.

It would also be great if you had a chance to go add your review to the Guides and Outfitters review section of JHO.

OK I added the review without problems and here is the hog my partner shot while we were at Camp 5. All four of us tagged out. This is not the pic of the pig that came after my buddy but the guy in this pic is the one who was nearly hammered by another hog.

Congrats,
And it's always good to see one of the JHO flock score on a "nice" pig. Camp 5 is a good spot and even though the prices are going up everywhere to hunt these "feral non natives", it is still a good deal when you figure in the price per pound for pork, then add in the fun factor...
