BAKERSFIELD, Calif. A poacher who killed a trophy-sized elk known as "Big Daddy" has been sentenced to two months in jail and fined a thousand dollars.
Prosecutors say John Russell Reed of Bear Valley shot the massive animal in the Kern County mountains in October. The elk was nearly the size of a horse and had a 16-point rack.
Reed had said he shot the animal to feed his four hungry children, but state game officials disputed that claim, saying he shot it for the antlers.
Reed pleaded guilty Friday to six misdemeanors, including possessing wildlife out of season, unlawfully taking an animal, and wasting game. He will serve three years probation after being freed from jail.
While on probation, Reed can't possess a gun or hunt, and he must forfeit the antlers.
