BAKERSFIELD, Calif. A poacher who killed a trophy-sized elk known as "Big Daddy" has been sentenced to two months in jail and fined a thousand dollars.

Prosecutors say John Russell Reed of Bear Valley shot the massive animal in the Kern County mountains in October. The elk was nearly the size of a horse and had a 16-point rack.

Reed had said he shot the animal to feed his four hungry children, but state game officials disputed that claim, saying he shot it for the antlers.

Reed pleaded guilty Friday to six misdemeanors, including possessing wildlife out of season, unlawfully taking an animal, and wasting game. He will serve three years probation after being freed from jail.

While on probation, Reed can't possess a gun or hunt, and he must forfeit the antlers.

When you can sell the antlers for 10x that the risk is worth it to some. Until the judges put some teeth in the consequences for poaching we're going to keep seeing this. It's a pity because some hunter is now denied the chance to take Big Daddy.

I wonder what the wardens and D.A. recemmended as far as a sentence.

In Colorado it's a felony that can result in a state prison sentence.Cal has always been easy on game thieves but the slap doesn't accomplish anything cause they keep doing it even while on probation cause they can't be watched 24 7.

This poaching occured in the community of Bear Valley Springs, a valley adjacent to the valley I live in, up in Tehachapi. Let me just sum up the highlights of this case: B&C trophy North American Elk; was shot several times with a .22 cal rifle in a mountainous residential area; the front legs, a hind quarter, and antlers were taken and the carcass left near a roadway; evidence found in Bakersfield after an extended undercover investigation, which led to the shooter and partner.

You be the judge. . .read the full story from the Tehachapi News:
