Well i'm finally getting around to creating my journal...i've had a decent start to the season as far as numbers but nothing of any size yet. I found my first fresh shed (farthest right) on January 8th which was my earliest ever. January 10th i managed to scoop up another.....and then on the 18th i found my third of the year. All were found on alfalfa and CRP fields as i've been trying to stay out of the bedding areas till they really hit the ground.

Sorry for not getting any ATL's but I really wasn't expecting to find anything that early in the year

I had a long dry spell from the 18th of Jan. till the 11th of february when i found this 2 1/2 yr old 120 class 10 point. He looked like he was a casualty of the firearms season but it was hard to tell since the coyotes had been working on him for quite some time. I cut the horns off individually to make a new set of rattling antlers for next season

I have been staying out of the woods lately and been spending alot more time scouting and watching where the bucks are holed up....but with a heavy snowfall headed my way i went out and walked for 6 hours on friday the 23rd of February. The day started out pretty slow with just one little dink in the first 3 1/2 hours of walking. Then i took off to a different farm and grid patterned a creek bottom that i've been watching a few nice bucks cross. I didn't have any luck along the creek bottom but decided to sweep through one bedding ridge during the last hour of light. It's amazing how you can walk for endless hours and not find anything and all of a sudden hit the jackpot. In that last hour i managed to find 3 singles within 100 yards of each other. Here they are at home

That night we received 20" of snow and since then have received another 10" so i'm out of commission for awhile now

Congrats,you've got a good start to the season.

Wiith all that snow you've got the sheds should be concentrated once it melts.The hard part is waiting to be able to get out there and look.

I made it out today for about 6 hours and managed to find a few. The walking was tough as we've lost about 3 feet of snow in the last 4 days...it was sloppy to say the least but i managed to stay on my feet and even found a few freshies.
Walked up on a grouse and managed to snap a pic

not long after the grouse i picked up a forkhorn, and about fifty yards later i found this 4 pt. side about 15 yards off of a cut corn field

I continued along following a south facing ridge trying to zigzag through all of the bedding points. I came up to a really nice point and figured i'd sit down and take a break. I set my camera and binocs on a log and went to take a leak....i dang near whizzed on this little 3 point side. It actually made me jump...can't belive i didn't see it sooner

Well that was enough to put the spark back in my step so i canceled the break and started griding the point i was on. About 35 yards from the small three point i came across this heavy but short tined 4 point side.

I did a pretty thorough search for either of the matches but came up empty. By this time it was getting pretty dark so i headed back to the truck. On the way back i came across a tiny little 2 point that i had found the other side to the last time i was out. Nothing worth an ATL but good to finally match one up.. First of the Year! So i managed to scoop up 5 total which puts me at 12 for the season. Not a huge number but a personal best for myself and i still have quite a bit of ground that i haven't touched yet. Here's the 5 together

I made it out yesterday morning after work for an hour. I started in some mature pines that had alot of fresh droppings and was loaded with deer sign. I was surprised to not find any in the pines but i crossed a fenceline into some old overgrown pasture ground and found this little forkie laying under an apple tree

I searched around that area for some time but was unable to come up with any more so i called it a day and went to sleep. Four hours later i got a phone call that woke me up and i couldnt' get back to sleep so i figured i might as well make use of my time and go cover some more ground.

I started on a CRP field that i had some luck on last year but didn't find anything....there was still snow in spots so they may be buried yet. I spent about 4 hours total walking the crp field and a brushy ridge above it...i moved some deer around but wasn't able to pick up any antlers. I was feeling pretty beat and started to head back toward my truck. I was walkin across an alfalfa field and something told me to check a small patch of set aside ground right above the alfalfa. I no more than stepped into the tall grass and found this little 2 point

That little 2 point got me fired up again so i figured i cover one more small strip of soybeans that had been overseeded with clover. About 25 yards into the field i found a 5" spike. As i picked up the spike i turned to my right and seen this 8 point matching set. This was the first set that i have ever found together so i was pretty pumped....even did the ol' air punch

I covered the rest of that small field but didn't come up with anything else. Here's a pic of the 5 from the day together

Congrats on an Awesome day!!

You gotta love it when you find those sets together.Leaves out all the guessing and worries where the other side might be laying.Bet seeing that set laying really got the pumper going.
I have that problem about wanting to cover one last patch everytime I go.It seems the further out of the way I go to check a spot the better the rewards once I get there.At the end of the day though that little extra walk is too much sometimes.

Thanks deershed! I hear what you're saying about wanting to cover a little more at the end of the day....i was so beat when i got to work last night that i was totally worthless....but hey i'll trade being worthless at work for a couple of sheds anyday....just don't tell my boss that
