PORTOLA - Weather permitting, the Department of Fish and Game (DFG) has scheduled a 15-acre detonation cord discharge on Lake Davis for Wednesday, March 19. The shot, part of DFG's continuing efforts to control and contain the invasive and predatory northern pike within the 4,000-acre lake, will take place sometime between 1 and 3 p.m. at a shallow area of Lake Davis called South-south Mosquito Slough.
Three years ago, the Department of Fish and Game (DFG) and Lake Davis Steering Committee released a management plan for Lake Davis which outlined more than a dozen recommendations for controlling and containing pike in the lake. Since then, nearly 25,000 pike have been removed from the reservoir under the plan's recommendations, which included electro-fishing, netting and purse seining. Nearly 18,000 of the fish were removed in 2002, most of which were small fish less than a year old.
The last "experimental" recommendation which has not yet been fully implemented is the underwater use of detonation cord. This first scheduled shot is timed to occur during a key two-week spawning period in a shallow portion of the lake when the ice first thaws. Other shots may occur during 2003 as needed. Last April, DFG set off a successful one-acre detonation cord test. Detonation cord can kill pike by creating a low-level, yet widespread underwater shockwave. By targeting areas of the reservoir where pike are concentrated, it is hoped that the use of detonation cord will slow the growth of the pike population. A DFG news release from 2002 further explaining detonation cord can be found at http://www.dfg.ca.gov/northernpike/detcord_newsrel.htm.
