Well I was on a mission yesterday, mostly to do with the fact that I didn't see squat opening week. Hit the woods around 1:30, cloudy-light drizzle, didn't see much fresh sign, but did see a couple tracks that looked very recent. The most sign I found was in three wallows that weren't more than 20 yards apart. They were tore up and looked like pigs were using them often. After a couple hours of hiking I decided my best bet would be to head back towards the wallows and wait until dark. I carefully picked a spot to sit and wait (this is the same exact location last year where I sat for a couple hours and finally stood up to stretch my legs, only to have a huge boar looking right at me at 20 yards and turn and run.)
I picked some cover to hide behind and decided to sit and wait it out. I sat down for about 30 seconds and here came a Huge Black Boar (200 lbs+) 11 yards out in front of me. He headed straight for the wallow directly in front of me and started to roll around. I decide that I would pin him to the ground while he laid in the mud so I took the shot, 11 yards down hill and broadsided. As soon as I stuck him he jumped up and ran, the arrow was in his right shoulder but seemed a little high. He crashed through the trees and brush and I followed the sound of my carbon arrow bouncing against the trees across the hillside out in front of me. From the sounds he seemed hurt because I could hear him thrashing around in the brush. For some unknown reason the canyon I was in had cell phone reception and I talked to AS who agreed with me that I should wait until morning and go looke for the pig.
This morning I was in the woods looking for sign and followed the his tracks 200 yards from the point of entry. No Blood. His tracks got lost in the leaves. I believe the shot had killed him but he didn't bleed right away because of the angle of the arrow in his shoulder. I was disappointed. I searched for a couple hours with nothing to show.
After doing a little hiking I glassed up 5 big pigs out in the open about 800 yards away and across a canyon. I laced up the track spikes and took off after them. I get to where I think I can put a stalk on them and they have vanished. This new spot I was in was tore up with sign. Rooting, wallows, rubs, and poop everywhere. This will be a great spot for next time.
One lost pig, next time.
