Well I was on a mission yesterday, mostly to do with the fact that I didn't see squat opening week. Hit the woods around 1:30, cloudy-light drizzle, didn't see much fresh sign, but did see a couple tracks that looked very recent. The most sign I found was in three wallows that weren't more than 20 yards apart. They were tore up and looked like pigs were using them often. After a couple hours of hiking I decided my best bet would be to head back towards the wallows and wait until dark. I carefully picked a spot to sit and wait (this is the same exact location last year where I sat for a couple hours and finally stood up to stretch my legs, only to have a huge boar looking right at me at 20 yards and turn and run.)

I picked some cover to hide behind and decided to sit and wait it out. I sat down for about 30 seconds and here came a Huge Black Boar (200 lbs+) 11 yards out in front of me. He headed straight for the wallow directly in front of me and started to roll around. I decide that I would pin him to the ground while he laid in the mud so I took the shot, 11 yards down hill and broadsided. As soon as I stuck him he jumped up and ran, the arrow was in his right shoulder but seemed a little high. He crashed through the trees and brush and I followed the sound of my carbon arrow bouncing against the trees across the hillside out in front of me. From the sounds he seemed hurt because I could hear him thrashing around in the brush. For some unknown reason the canyon I was in had cell phone reception and I talked to AS who agreed with me that I should wait until morning and go looke for the pig.

This morning I was in the woods looking for sign and followed the his tracks 200 yards from the point of entry. No Blood. His tracks got lost in the leaves. I believe the shot had killed him but he didn't bleed right away because of the angle of the arrow in his shoulder. I was disappointed. I searched for a couple hours with nothing to show.

After doing a little hiking I glassed up 5 big pigs out in the open about 800 yards away and across a canyon. I laced up the track spikes and took off after them. I get to where I think I can put a stalk on them and they have vanished. This new spot I was in was tore up with sign. Rooting, wallows, rubs, and poop everywhere. This will be a great spot for next time.

One lost pig, next time.

Sorry you lost the hog, but i know you put in a good effort.
Just seeing a hog on public land is a huge accomplishment, finding that hog would have been icing on the cake.

Bummer about the lost boar. You guessed right and waited in exactly the right spot. Congrats. There are some areas out there that are completely roto-tilled and obviously fresh, and I can't wait to get back out there.

Hey Tony... gotta start doing like AssShooter and bust 'em in the backside. Forget about those broadside, heart-lung shots.

Dang Judo points!!!

Seriously, that must have been neat to see a hog wallowing.
Bummer about not recovering your hog.

Seems like you and Arrowslinger have that place pretty well figured out.

Well, I flew in from Colorado and we were there and ready to go thursday morning. One of the guys I was with jumped some pigs early but could not get on them. We did fing a lot of wallows and knew we were close a few times because we could hear them but just could not get on them.

One of my other friends put the sneak on a 300+ lb Sow but way under estimated the distance and shot under her. We were there for 2 days and got nothing.

We had intended to go Steelheading but were having too much fun and wanted to continue to hunt but Sonoma was closed for the weekend so we hooked up with a guy up north and did a self guided hunt on his ranch.

Saturday was slow for me until the end of the day but between my two friends they spotted about 12 hogs. Around 4 PM, all hell broke loose. My one friend had 4 hogs come by at 30 yards and he hit one hard. I managed to find him and help him look but we could not find the pig. While we were looking for his pig, our other friend came on the radio and had 20 pigs around him as close as 8 ft at times. His only problem is that he shot his 2 arrows at a pig that was running about 10 minutes before all of the other pigs came out. We ran up to where he was and I got on a big boar at 60 yards. I took the shot and my arrow got deflected. I tracked the 20 hogs down into a nasty hole and as I was looking over the edge to see where they were, another bore was working his way back up to me. I backed up about 3 feet and drew my bow. The pig came by me at about 8 feet and quartered away and I drilled him.

Just as I hit the pig it started getting dark so we decided to head out and get both pigs the next day. Well, to our dismay, it was a wet night and all of the blood was washed away. We looked for both pigs for 6 hours and did not find either one. It made me sick to know I killed that pig and had to leave it out there.

I had a ton of fun and will be back to hunt Sonoma and that private ranch. The privte ranch was a real nice opperation. the 3 of us had the whole ranch to our selves. If anyone wants info, let me know and I will get you set up.

Sounds like a great hunt. I know the feeling of lossing an animal... (You helped track my lost hog last time, wish I could have done the same here.)
