It took me a time or two to have success posting pics too.
Nice job.
Wish I could have been there . I really like that country.
You aught to post a short run down of the hunt for all to enjoy.
Thats what its all about here .
Yeah, he has one extra point on the right side and two definite extra points on the left with a possible third tiny point on the left as well. I will post the story tomorrow hopefully, trying to get some info together for my X7a hunt coming up. Take care.
Well here it goes. Got up to the area (Pine Creek Valley) on thursday giving myself a couple days of scouting before the saturday opener. Within the first 10 minutes of being there I spotted a buck all by himself in a small open area on the opposite side of Hwy 44 as Pine Creek Valley. I glassed him awhile and decided to come back later for a better look. I drove all around Pine Creek Valley, Harvey Mtn, etc..... and only saw a few does in Pine Creek Valley. Talked to some firefighters in Bogard and they hadn't seen anything although their buddy did get a buck during archery off 395. Later that day I went back to wher I had seen that buck and he was right where I left him. This was a small area called Windy Hollow. I actually drove out into the area he was in as I was looking for access and he never moved. I videoed him from about 100 yards and he could have cared less I was there.
Friday morning I woke up and started glassing at about 6 am in Pine Creek Valley where I had camped for the night. I immediately saw several does and a buck out in the valley over by some railroad tracks close to Hwy 44. I made my way there I used the tracks as cover to get close and saw the buck was small. I then decided to go check out the Hwy 395 area as a back up since I wasnt seeing much here. I drove all around Skedaddle Mtn and up towards Five Springs and never saw a thing. I ran into a couple other hunters that said they had seen some does. The area off 395 was nowhere near as nice to hunt in as Pine Creek Valley so I decided to head back and hit it hard there.
Once again that same buck was in his normal spot and decided to go from him Saturday morning. Saturday morning came and I headed into Windy Hollow looking for "my" buck. He was there grazing so I began a stalk up to some trees for a better shot. I should have stayed where I was and waited him out. I made it to the trees without being detected and was having a hard time getting set for a shot. I finally move around the side of the tree for my shot and he is gone! I move around the other side of the treee and there he is, looking right at me and off he goes. I probably could have tried to squeeze off a quick shot but decided against it since he had been so easy to get close too earlier on. Needless to say, that was the last time I ever saw him up close again. I saw him for a brief second before he ran off into some trees and that was it. I spent the rest of my saturday in Pine Creek Valley chasing a fairly large herd with 2 to 3 bucks it.
This was my first antelope hunt and I learned a lot. Their eyesight is everybit as amazing as I was told. I got close on a small rise late saturday and took a shot downhill about 300 yards but missed low. Next time I will have a range finder. I did see two guys take a buck saturday afternoon in the Valley. I watched them and between the two of them they kind of herded the herd into a small cut where one of the guys took his buck.
Sunday morning I am out in the Valley again chasing that same herd, which now appears to be about 40 antelope between the three groups. I can glass several bucks but never got close for a shot. Sunday afternoon my father in law, who came along to observe, leaves for home around 1130 am. I take off driving some other roads out near Harvey Valley and Grays Valley. I pass three does sitting under a tree and to my amazement there is a buck sitting in front of them. I continue driving up the road a few hundred yards and pull over. I started my stalk back towards them and got in some trees for cover and my shot. I waited for about 30 minutes for the buck to get up or move because all I could see was his head and didnt want to risk missing. He was in tall grass and I wasnt sure if a log was in front of him or not. After 30 minutes of standing in the heat and decided to move forward about 10 feet and use my shooting sticks and take a shot. I took the shot, he jumped up with the does and moved back towards the woods more. The does stopped about 20 yards away and so did he, right behind a bush. The second he cleared the bush as he walked toward the does, I dropped him. Father in law missed the kill by an hour an 30 minutes. A couple archery deer hunters helped me get him into my truck and to them I say thanks!
All in all, it was an awesome hunt. I learned a lot and if I had it to do over, there are some things I would do differently. Pine Creek Valley holds some nice herds and it is a very nice area to hunt. I know this was long winded but I get excited and just keep writing. Good luck to everyone with their hunts and now Im off for my X7a hunt. Take care.
