I just wanted to know if anyone has ever drawn a tag up there. I put in every year but have never been lucky enough to get one. I am just wondering how the hunting is, just in case I get lucky.
I hunted up there a few years ago and bagged a nice buck. It's not hard to find them, I hunted P2 and had a lot of opportunities. There's tons of public land. Hunt the stock ponds and reserviors and the areas near agriculture. I took mine near a small lake a couple miles over a ridge from some alfalfa fields. Shots ranged from about 300 yards to 15 yards. - honest! Two bucks, 15 minutes after I got there, in the Devil's Garden area on opening day. I couldn't bring myself to shoot, even after I watched them amble out to more sporting distances. They couldn't have cared less. Had several shots at 125-150 yards over the next few days. Finally took mine at about 80 yards after a good sneak through some junipers with about an hour of shooting time left on my last day to hunt.
My Dad and I hunted there in 99. Both got bucks, mine on the second day and Dad's was on the third day. should have had them on the first day. We hunted period 2 and had this one area all to ourselves on the weekend. Mine was shot just south of Alturas and Dad's came off of the "Garden". My shot was at about 35 yards and Dad's about 225 yards. Great hunt and can't wait to do it again. Unfortunately I have to wait another five years to even apply. Might have to go to Wyoming or elsewhere in the mean time.
My friend and I drew last year, we had a good time and got a couple of nice bucks, but finding a good antelope sure isn't as easy as it is in Wyoming. If you happen to draw, using a guide may not be a bad idea. There are some that are both reputable and very affordable. The zone is huge and many of the good bucks are in Devils Garden. You need some time to scout.
Be very careful if you use some of the local guides. A few of them will put you in places and do things that will cost you some real money if you are busted.
