I got a couple chances to get out with the boys and the dogs while I Was home this Christmas. This hunt took place about 2 minutes from my house. My friends were pushing the valley bottom with the dogs and I was sitting about 800' above them on the top of the valley hoping for some runaways.

I was sitting and listening for dogs when I heard something rustling through the leaves. By the time I got up to follow it it had passed me, luckily it hit the road behind me and circled back right to me. It must have sensed me and froze with its head behind a tree. I sent a 20ga slug from my Winchester Defender into its shoulder and that was all she wrote.

Turns out my friends also caught a sow right before I shot mine, somehow I didn't hear a thing which is unusual because I had clear line of sight with most of the valley. They were about the same size and had the same coloring.

Made some awesome ribs from it! Luckily I was close enough (20 minutes) from my truck to just carry it over my shoulders fireman style. We dry rubbed it with spices, brown sugar and sea salt, then cooked it at 300 for 3 hours wrapped in tin foil. Then split them up with scissors and threw them on the grill with a homemade bbq sauce. So good.

Good job, Ev. Does that slow cooking soften up even the big old pigs? Some of the pigs on the Big Island seem to be pretty tough. Have you hunted on the Big Island at all recently? I've been bird hunting but no big game. I plan to hunt Laupahoehoe on Saturday either next week or the week after, if you're interested. Lots of pigs around my house now. Pig alarm went off at 1:00 AM this morning, I staggered out with a floodlight, saw dark shadow 5 feet beyond rock wall, shined light, 6 or 7 pigs, all of them 100+ pounds grazing happily, too lazy to go get the crossbow, watched them dine for a minute or so, staggered back to bed.

Any word on Nicolai? Is he still hunting or has some hot babe lured him out of the woods for good?

Aloha.

The slow cooking does soften up the meat a bunch. Just think slow cooked pulled pork. This pig could have used another 2 hours in the oven to help soften up the loin. But the rib meat was plenty tender. I wouldn't choose a big boar, or a skinny pig to make ribs from. But a nice fat 80lb sow that just weened a litter is the perfect pig to make ribs from.

I'm definitly down for a Laupahoehoe hunt. Just let me know when you're going so I can phone in my license number and all that.

Ive been bugging Nic to come over here and he will be this spring. He was supposed to come over the beginning of December but he flaked. He got a new 30-06 and wants to test it out on some sheep.

I acquired a 1970 Remington 700 BDL .308 while I was home. I'll be bringing it over here sometime this spring. Its a rusty pile, but we cleaned it up pretty good and wire brushed most the rust off, then treated it with jasco.

If Laupahoehoe sounds good, how about Sat the 23rd of Jan? I've got a .308, a Winchester 100, but it jams unless I load my own small base cartridges. Consequently, I've got a bunch of .308 lying around that I can't ever use. You want them? I'll bring them along and give them to you. They're just taking up space.

Let me know about the 23rd. I can meet you at that little kipuka check station and we can take my truck in.

Later.

Call Hilo Forestry and Wildlife [DLNR] the Wednesday before the hunt [1/20]between 8-12, better closer to 12. I'll bring the .308 ammo since it won't do me any good here.

Will email or call to confirm when we get closer to 1/23. Should be really good hunting.

Aloha and post some more pig adventures. I'm going to clobber the first pig that comes into my yard tonight, regardless of how tired I am.
