I got a couple chances to get out with the boys and the dogs while I Was home this Christmas. This hunt took place about 2 minutes from my house. My friends were pushing the valley bottom with the dogs and I was sitting about 800' above them on the top of the valley hoping for some runaways.
I was sitting and listening for dogs when I heard something rustling through the leaves. By the time I got up to follow it it had passed me, luckily it hit the road behind me and circled back right to me. It must have sensed me and froze with its head behind a tree. I sent a 20ga slug from my Winchester Defender into its shoulder and that was all she wrote.
Turns out my friends also caught a sow right before I shot mine, somehow I didn't hear a thing which is unusual because I had clear line of sight with most of the valley. They were about the same size and had the same coloring.
Made some awesome ribs from it! Luckily I was close enough (20 minutes) from my truck to just carry it over my shoulders fireman style. We dry rubbed it with spices, brown sugar and sea salt, then cooked it at 300 for 3 hours wrapped in tin foil. Then split them up with scissors and threw them on the grill with a homemade bbq sauce. So good.
