HEY BIRDDAWG
WE HUNTED THIS PAST WEEKEND.NO SIGN OF HOGS AT ALL. SAW A FEW DOES AND ONE BUCK. THE HOG HUNTING SEEMS SLIM TO NONE. I SPOKE WITH A GUY FROM THE RANCH AT THE END OF THE ROAD.I THINK ITS BURRNET HUNTING CLUB.HE SAID THAT JIM OVERHUNTED OUR PROPERTY AND HE JOINED THE OTHER RANCH FOR THAT REASON. HE TOLD ME THAT A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO THEIR WERE 65 PEOPLE ON OAKTREE ON OPENING DEER SEASON. I DONT KNOW IF THE FIGURES ARE CORRECT ,BUT ANY AMOUNT CLOSE TO THAT IS A LOT OF PEOPLE. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS??

THANKS FOR ANY INFORMATION

JACKMAN

Well I don't have much good to say about leroy.....best word is tweaker.....anywho.......the ranch has been over hunted...by burnett and his crew just as much as club members.....this guy said he joined the burnett hunting club because the oak tree club was over hunted? ....LOL.....burnet hunting club was part of oak tree........the club split when half the ranch sold and leroy took the other half.........it's a big soap opera and you'll here several sides of the story........as far as game........well the hogs are there .....they move around alot..........I know 3 guys here in town thats killed hogs up there in the last month......last year I had several oportunities to shoot hogs...........the biggest problem with the ranch is most of it is covered with brush......the deer are there too.........just have to work at getting them.....but that's why it's called hunting......the one thing the guy said right is the club has too many members........know one really knows how many.......but last year on opening day there were 11 people on the club.........which is a far cry from 65........and opening day, heck let all the club members go on opening day........the last couple weeks of season is the time to hunt...JMO.

THANKS BIRDDAWG
IT DOES SEEM LIKE THERE ARE A LOT OF FINGERS BEING POINTED. I GUESS IM A LITTLE SPOILED ON THE HOGS,AS THE OTHER RANCHES IVE HUNTED I AT LEAST SAW SIGNS. BEDS,SCAT,TRACKS. I DO GET OUT AND BEAT THE BRUSH SO TIME WILL TELL. PROBABLY LESS WATER WILL CENTRALIZE THE PIGS. THE DEER HUNTING LOOKS LIKE IT SHOULD BE GOOD.IVE ALWAYS SEEN BUCKS AND DOES WHEN IVE BEEN THEIR. THE COUNTRY LOOKS GREAT FOR HUNTING DEER.
AS FAR AS HOW MANY MEMBERS... I WAS TOLD 30 SEEMS LIKE A LOT. I DO AGREE WITH YOU ABOUT FORGETTING OPENING WEEKEND. I THINK DURING THE WEEK WOULD BE BETTER

THANKS AGAIN JACKMAN

Hello everyone, let me first introduce myself since I have been lurking around here for some time. My name is Jeff Kenney. I'm an avid archery hunter and duck hunter. I recently moved to Bakersfield and I'm trying to find places to hunt in this area. I came from the Fresno area and belonged to a club 30 min north of Fresno up by sun mtn gun club. With the price of gas now it is a little pricey to run up there for a day of hunting and the place does not offer any pigs or archery hunting for the deer. A few of you have mentioned a club in the Los Gatos canyon area. I was wondering if someone could give me some information about it or a contact number.
I'm also looking for some hunting partners in this area. All my hunting partners live up north and hate to travel south.
my e-mail is

or
jkenney@kerndelta.org

I've been watching this topic of the forum for months now and just never got the nerve up to ask for some help. Now I'm getting cabin fever and want to go hunting but have no place to go.

Thanks for any help or advise in advance!!

I dont want to put down any clubs but i can pay to hunt on three or four ranches per year and hunt fort hunterligget and camp roberts the rest of the year for the same money as some of these club prices. You might want to look into that be fore you buy into a club. Just a thought.

Jackman - a couple of things on an fyi basis. Two or three years ago, there were a lot of hunters on the property, numbers unknown, because and the previous owner of the hunting club was illeagaly feeding the deer and pigs; and most of the deer and hogs killed were shot off of the feeders. Several arrests were made. However, other than luring most of the deer from the surrounding country onto the ranch for a couple of years (really screwed up my hunting), this has not really affected animal numbers or the hunting.

In any event, this ranch, split in half or no, is in one of the premium deer and hog areas in the entire state. But the game, especially hogs, will just seem to dissapear into thin air occasionally - sometimes for a couple of days, sometimes for a couple of weeks. But believe me, they are there in large numbers, and persistance will find you a good one.

I suggest two approaches - one, several of you spread out an dhunt up hill from the bottom road to the top, and then turn around and hunt down different ridges. Slow hunt your way along and sooner or later, you will jump pigs / deer. This is a great way to hunt, with or without dogs. Secondly, spot and stalk is a great way if you have identified a feeding area.

I hope this gives you some encouragement as I would gladly hunt there if I did not have another place to go. And, I would kill a deer every year and several hogs if I chose to. P.S. - If you see Junior again, tell him Don (neighboring ranch) says hi.

LOL......as I said before jackman.....you'll hear several different stories on this:

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div>
because and the previous owner of the hunting club was illeagaly feeding the deer and pigs; and most of the deer and hogs killed were shot off of the feeders.[/b]

......and I can see that California Hunter has about 1% of the facts and fabricated the rest....he was right about feeders......the club had several feeders that were used in the past but were broken or (as in most of them) just a drum hanging in the tree.......I beleive there might have been one new feeder that someone put up just before the club was shut down......I've heard people used to get hogs using these feeders but I have yet to hear of anyone shooting a deer from around one.......funny thing is leroy had several feeders and tree stands that he took down just before the game wardens came in..strange coincidence.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div>
Several arrests were made.[/b]

there were no arrests made......the club was shut down for most of deer season as to let any animals that may have been attracted to any feeders disperse......funny thing is only club members were not allowed to hunt.....leroy and his crew did.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div>
previous owner[/b]

the previous owner was named Jim..........yup........same guy who let you join..........if you have any questions on this just call and ask jim..he'll fill you in.......more than likely California Hunter is a member of the howell ranch club and is disgruntled about not seeing much game.......from what I've heard from those club members is that theres not alot of water on that side......I don't know, never been there...but oak tree has alot of water (which is good and bad) and attracts game.

Well guys, what started out as a friendly chat between hunters has gotten a bit out of hand, but I do feel somewhat compelled to reply to Birddawg; if for no other reason than the obvious fact that he has no basis for many of his statements other than a personal bias for the previous owner of a hunting club, and an obvious lack of history or knowledge, long term, of the area.

1. Leeroy Burnett Junior is not a Tweeker!!! He has been small, thin, wiry, and hyperactive from the day he was born.
2. According to a DFG biologist I talked to last year, hunters in Los Gatos Canyon have enjoyed some of the highest success rates as deer hunters over the past fifty years. There are, of course, other very good areas, but none have exceeded this area over time.
3. The Howell Ranch is blessed in that is has more water than any other ranch in the entire canyon. And, the west side of the canyon generally has more water than the east side; but when you find water on the east side, it is usually a really big spring. There is the exception of Pine Canyon and White Creek on the Birdwell place which usually have water in them year round in several places.
4. THERE WERE SEVERAL ARRESTS MADE - AND THERE WERE SOME CONVICTIONS. THAT IS A FACT.
5. NO ONE HUNTED THE RANCH, INCLUDING THE BURNETTS, THE YEAR THE RANCH WAS CLOSED.
6. BURNETT DID NOT PUT UP, OR OPERATE FEEDERS OR A FEEDING PROGRAM FOR THE PURPOSE OF TAKING GAME. I KNOW, I HUNTED THAT RANCH FOR NEARLY TWENTY YEARS AND I WAS HORSEBACK ON THE PROPERTY EVERY YEAR FOR NEARLY TWENTY FIVE YEARS. NEVER DID I SEE A FEEDER OR GAME FEEDING SITE EVEN CLOSE TO OPERATIONAL DURING DEER SEASON.
7. IF LEEROY HAD BEEN HUNTING / SITTING ON BAITED FEEDERS, HE TOO WOULD HAVE BEEN ARRESTED. AND, BIRDDAWG, IF YOU KNEW ABOUT THE ILLEAGAL FEEDING ACTIVITIES BY ANYONE, WHY DIDN'T YOU TURN THEM IN AND COOPERATE WITH DFG IN ILLICITING AN ARREST. OR, WERE YOU NOT A MEMBER THAN AND ARE JUST RECITING GOSSIP YOU PICKED UP SOMEWHERE?
8. I KNOW FOR A FACT YOU ARE NOT DEALING WITH ANY "JIM" AS IT PERTAINS TO THE HUNTING CLUB!! STOP STIRRING THE POT.

Okay, no more ranting by me. Jackman, feel free to ask any questions you wish about hunting, style of hunting, tips on sighting in your rifle if you are new to long range shooting areas, etc. I will be more than happy to give you and your boys any advice I can. Also, I did not mean to stir the pot, but was simply trying to give you some history on the place you hunt, and a little bit of history on the area. Perhaps someday we can meet at the County Park - perhaps opening week of deer season, and discuss the where's and hows of hunting the place.

LOL........California Hunter....your so full of crap........I was there the day the game wardens showed up......who got arrested?......wasn't me..........wasn't anyone I hunted with.........wasn't jim..........wasn't anyone in camp........so who got arrested?,,,,,,,,as for the howell ranch having more water than any other ranch..I stated that I have never been on the ranch and that I was going by what people who hunt howells told me.........I'm not going to argue about leroy as it really doesn't matter....other than I know he had feeders and hunted over them......and just to prove your full of crap:

My family has been hunting the ranch since walter burnett first bought the ranch. back in the late fiftys i belive. i have hunted their up to the time that walters wife sold the place. i hvae lots of friends that live up los gatos. they did get caught feeding, no arrest were made. the ranch was shut down to every one. junior did not get to hunt it. i hvae been lucky enough to hunt almost all of los gatos from condon down. and alot from condon over to hwy 25. we used to hunt the old los gatos creek ranch when nunez had. birddawg knows what i am talking about. from what i have seen oak tree has the most water on it. i have hunted birdwell, howell, and alot of the smaller ones. the pigs and deer are their. i hvae killed plenty off of their. it like anywhere else just have to find them.

Do you know anyone up their or near that would let a couple of boys remove some of the ground squirrel population for them?? I have two boys (12,15) one first class scout and one Life scout that really enjoy the squirrel action. Probably more than big game hunting. Any input would be great.

Thanks Jackman
