I just booked my vacation to Maui:mooning:taking the little lady for her Bday! 10/30 - 11/8

I just printed my exemption form so I can get an out of state license. It looks like pigs will be the main game along with birds on 11/7. Now do I take my shotgun, or bow?
I already have a friend on Maui who is setting up a hunt for pigs....hopfully with dogs and knifes or spears. I will have to plan a hunt on my own due to work conflicts of my Maui guest. So where should I go? We are staying near Hana.

Thanks for any help!

I just got my exemption letter. Only took about a week, and the license was 5 minutes online. We're going to be on Maui in late November, and I'd love to get a pig. If you have any info you could pass along, that would be great.
Good luck, and let me know if you bring your shotgun, I'm thinking along the same lines...

cool!

i hoped to do the same thing, but cannot really afford the 2 day spa excursion it would take for me to sneak out the service entrance wearing camo. ;)

Yeah, I'm going to have to put the Bose headphones on my wife and grab the keys to the rental car...

If you are staying in Hana, just head up the mountain. The State of Hawaii DLNR web page has maps of the hunting areas as well as the regs. If you choose to chase them on your own without the dogs, I would suggest a rifle. The cover get really thick and dropping them in a hurry is a must.

One other thing, the pigs here are smaller. A 200 pound pig here is a nice one.

Rodney, I'll be staying with friends in Kihei, is the west Maui reserve the best spot for pigs or should I try someplace else. I will have a 4x4 jeep to use and I'll bring the 30-06 for good stopping power any other suggestions?

I can't wait we leave this Friday!!!!
I just purchased my hunting license online boy was that easy...get a hint California!!

Anyway I have talked the wife into being the camerawoman for at least one of the hunts hopefully the one we do with the dogs. That will cost me a day at Little Beach laying out sun bathing and snorkeling with her....it could be worse?

So, the only thing left is to go sight in my 30-06 with LEAD no DAMN COPPER for me!! And hopefully get some info from any locals that are on this board.

Are boars the only ones that are stinky or are the sows also??????
Geeeezz I was hoping they would all be good:smiley_doh:should of known better it all depends on what they are eating. What type of vegetation should I be looking for besides fruit trees? I know what to look for on the main land but the islands are gonna be different. I've got a 4x4 jeep from Alamo so I plan on doing alot of driving and glassing if posible.

Are the goats any good to eat?

The sausage comment was referring to 'little beach'. Which is a notorious nude/gay beach. Yeah chances are there are quite a few Lop Cheong's there...

The boar's can be very good eating here. All depending on where they are shot and what time of the year it is (most recent food source). It's hard for me to tell you what to look for as I've never hunted Maui and am not familiar with any of the areas. Late summer like this the guava are usually going off and most of the fruit trees are slowing down.

I would just recommend hiking until you see fresh sign...then slowing down and finding the food sources. If you are hunting in more open territory, then your California hunting skills will come into play. Lots of glassing, hiking, glassing, hiking etc...

Thanks for everyones help!!
I will be hooking up with Rodney so he can give me some areas to look into.....sounds like the gun will stay home and the bow will be going with me, I'll be hunting Polipoli area which is Archery only.

Last time I was at little beach we had only on guy that was naked......nothing like talking to this local while he is conducting business(selling weed on the beach) he bends over and your talking to his ball sack.:skeered: All you can do is turn your head and stare at the boobies to clear your head!:lol bashing sign:

Bird season doesn't open until the 7th (I leave Maui on the 8th) I'm not sure if I'll have any time for that but I'll ask the wife and talk to Rodney about it.

Do you have any info on areas for birds? I heard that private land is a must for birds.

Private land is always going to be better than public, no matter where you hunt. However, Hawaii's public land is much better than ours.
If only for one day, I would take a shotgun. I would target the Black francolin. I would go to the public land on the West Maui Mountains, SW corner, behind the shooting range. Immediately after going through the tunnel on your way to Lahaina. I've seen grays and blacks in there. I even saw a goat back in there and locals say that there are none.
You could take the ferry to Molokai for the day and you'd get some really good hunting over there. Birds, pigs, goats etc.
